Shawn Purcell

Background: Shawn grew up in the East Bay but came to Marin in the mid-90s to play for the College of Marin under Al Endriss. There he was a teammate of fellow A's player Jon Breidinger. He would later play for the Novato Knicks helping them reach the AABC World Series in 2000 along with fellow A's player Mike Mastro'. Purcell has worked as a teacher, coach and psychologist. He works for both College of Marin and St. Mary's College, where he is a fellow teacher with A's player Roland Belcher.

Highlights: Purcell took to making highlights in his first appearance with the A's, striking out seven Brewers in three perfect innings on the mound. He also collected two hits in the game, scoring twice and driving in one run

Role: Shawn is a late arrival to the team. He signed on to play in the winter after a recommendation from current College of Marin coach and former teammate Steve Berringer. A bad back kept Purcell out of action for much of the summer, but he gave manager Ryan Metcalfe a surprise phone call in early August, asking to finish out the season. The A's hope Shawn will be able to pick up some innings on the mound and play some innings at the corner positions as they wind down the season. They also hope he will be able to join the team in the playoffs. His arm and bat could be a valuable asset in and attempt to win their second championship in three seasons.
