Mike Mastroyannakis

Background: Mike returns to baseball after a short layoff. He spent most of the last 15 years playing for the Novato Knicks, helping the semi-pro team make the Stan Musial World Series in 2001. Prior to playing for the Knicks, Mike walked on and played at USC graduating & lettering in 1990. The Novato High graduate played mostly third base behind two future professionals at USC, Rodney Peete and Jeff Cirillo. He tutored the younger Cirillo at third base to help the future all-star learn a new position. In high school he once started a double play from shortstop after the ball ricocheted off his cup. Anyone who played with Mastro', like A's manager Ryan Metcalfe did on the Knicks roughly 15 years earlier, knew he would be a hit in the REBL even with the short layoff.

Highlights:  Mastro' belted an RBI single in his second at-bat and the hits kept coming, bashing singles and doubles all over the park and even legged out two triples for an imposing .649 slugging percentage in his first season, 3rd in AL. His .474 average was just .19 behind Billy Dodson for the team high and 4th in AL. Mastro' also showed that he may have lost a step of range but he can still handle anything near him and his years of experience give him the wisdom to make the right choice, throwing out a runner at home on a slow chopper in the opening 9-2 win over the Padres. Mastro also showed he could hit the best ripping an RBI hit to drive in the first run off eventual Cy Young award winner Seth Calliat of the Titans to help the A's post a dramatic 3-run rally and tie the Titans in the 9th. He had 3 hits in that 2nd game of the season and 3 more in game 4, including an RBI 2B to the wall.  Went 2-for-4 with 3 RBI in a 17-1 win over Padres. Mastro' continued his mastery of the toughest pitching team in the AL going 1-for-2 with his key walk accounting for the game-winning run in the 9th scoring off the bat of Brodie Nissen in 5-4 win over the Titans. He continued to hit toughest pitching best going 2-for-4 with an RBI triple against former Cy Young pitcher Larry Hendrickson, helping the A's break a 5-5 tie in the fifth to set the tone in DH a sweep of the Silversox. The next week he went 4-for-5 with 3 RBI to blast the Brewers 16-3. He followed with a 3-for-5 game with 3 runs in a 19-6 win over the Red Sox including an RBI double in the 6th that began a streak of 3 straight games with a double.

Role: Mike is expected to anchor he left side of the infield playing third base or shortstop. He will play mostly third, backing up Dodson at short when Dodson pitches. He should continue to be a top run producer for the A's, because of his ability to make solid contact consistently, a line drive hitter with power.
