The Red Sox pushed the A's as well as any team in the REBL, but
eventually the A's deep lineup wore down Mike Abbadassa and the Red Sox
in a 19-6 victory. "This game wasn't easy," A's Manager Ryan Metcalfe said. "Mike is one of the better pitchers in the league and he made it tough on us through the first five innings. Our guys seem to have a habit of hitting better as the game goes on." The A's trailed 4-2 after the Red Sox scored four runs in the bottom of he second with two infield hits, two walks and two errors doing most of the damage. Ryan Russell's RBI single capped the rally of A's pitcher Shawn Purcell, who struck out seven, but struggled with his control. The A's picked up two runs in the third much like they did in the first, with Clinton Yeager sparking the rally. In the first, Yeager struck out but reached first on a wild pitch and after a bloop single by Ryan Metcalfe, Billy Dodson drove home two runs with a single. In the third Yeager singled, Metcalfe bunted him over and a pair of errors set up Jon Breidinger for the first of his three RBI doubles. The game remained tied 4-4 into the fifth before Dodson hit a leadoff single, stole second and scored on an error. Breidinger made the lead 6-4 with an RBI double. The Red Sox would cut the lead to 6-5 with an error yielding the lone run scored of Breidinger in three innings. Breidinger accounted for almost all the outs himself, striking out four and picking off two runners. "That's the best Jon has pitched all season," A's catcher Brodie Nissen said. The A's broke the game open with a six-run sixth started by back-to-back doubles from Brodie Nissen and Yeager. Nissen's hit was inches away from being a homer, hitting off the top of the wall in left. The surge continued with an RBI single by Dodson and an RBI double by Mike Mastro', who finished with three hits and three runs. Kevin Metcalfe concluded the big inning with a two-run double to center. The A's picked up seven more runs in the seventh with the big blows an RBI double by Breidinger, a two-run double by Purcell, and a two-run single by Yeager. Yeager ended the game with four hits, four runs, four stolen bases and three RBIs, reaching first in all six trips to the plate. "Clinton really sparks this offense with his hitting and his hustle," manager Ryan Metcalfe said. "He's been a great addition to this team on the field and in the dugout." Dodson, went 3-for-5 with four runs and four RBIs. Mastro' went 3-foir-5 with three runs. Breidinger with 3-for-5 with three doubles and three RBIs. Purcell finished with two doubles and two walks in five trips. The A's (14-1), who have won 13 straight, maintained their two-game lead on first place after the Titans and the Silversox both won as well. The A's get a week off before facing the Mets on September 10 at Napa Valley College. |
