scott & judi at king richard's faire. 9.30.01
a big wet muddy kiss from a foe!
cranberries are usually "wet harvested". first, the bog is flooded. next, machines that look like giant egg beaters jostle the berries from the plants. the crans float to the top and are skimmed from the surface with a large hose. sometimes the hose sucks up more than berries. when we were there, it caught a snapping turtle who was shortly returned to the bog after some show & tell.
above, the crans are still under the water; just under the surface. keeping the plants under water/ice during the winter prevents them from drying out and getting ruined by harsh wind.
the berries are cleaned on site by the machine above the truck. this truckload was shipped straight to Ocean Spray for processing that day.
