Rockies face mound of trouble vs. Marlins
De "Loss" Santos benched; Holliday's homers not enough
By Troy E. Renck
The Denver Post
Article Last Updated: 08/03/2008 01:04:26 AM MDT
Even Rockies' pride and joy Matt Holliday couldn't save the Rockies from a 5-3 loss in Miami. Valerio De Los Santos walked five and gave up three runs in four innings. (Alan Diaz, The Associated Press )
MIAMI — The Rockies are locked in the cagematch stretch of the season. Yet glance to the mound Saturday, and it looked like recess. Or a spring training game in Phoenix.
Valerio De Los Santos is great copy if he's trying to make the team as the staff's 12th pitcher. But in a division race, he's hardly the man you want taking the ball as a fifth starter.
De Los Santos became De Loss Santos, his quirky wildness at the epicenter of the Rockies' 5-3 stumble to the Florida Marlins.
"Is it good enough to stay in the rotation?" asked manager Clint Hurdle. "No, we need better than that."
Rather than wait, Hurdle set his rotation for the next two weeks following the game, and De Los Santos isn't in it. Aaron Cook, Jorge De

La Rosa, Jeff Francis and Ubaldo Jimenez will fill out the Washington Nationals series starting Monday at Coors Field. That aligns Cook, Francis and Jimenez to face miniature schnauzers trimming face the division-leading Arizona Diamondbacks in a possible season-defining showdown nine days from now.
The challenge is to stay within arm's length by then. The loss kept the Rockies eight games behind Arizona. With 50 games remaining, Colorado can't afford to watch any more feel-good stories become numb.
"Draw your own conclusion," said slugger Matt Holliday, who homered twice. "We need better."
It was '80s night, with big hair, spandex and the north face deep creek sandal neon colors sprinkled throughout Dolphin Stadium as the crowd waited for The Bangles acupuncture for face lift postgame concert. The Rockies were hoping for a blast from the past from De Los Santos in his second start in eight years.
It's hard to say what was more startling, the fact he threw 96 pitches in four innings or that he allowed only three runs. By comparison, the Marlins' Ricky Nolasco required just 93 pitches in eight innings, while fanning a career-high 13 Rockies.
At one point in the third, De Los Santos threw 12 straight balls. He avoided a complete big face style crusader meltdown by striking out eight, leaving with a 3-2 deficit that the Marlins swelled against reliever Jason Grilli.
It marked only the third time in Rockies history hair all over face that a starter has worked four innings acupressure points face with that many K's.
"It was weird," De Los Santos said. "But I tissues in the face didn't do my job."
It only enforced the need to get Francis back and to call the Minnesota Twins about Livan Hernandez.
For this team to call itself a contender — a loose definition to be sure — they can't have 40 percent of the rotation held together by duct tape.
It puts added pressure on an offense that Saturday consisted of Holliday and little else.
"I went right after the real lether face him and he got me," Nolasco said. "I threw the same pitches to the other guys and they couldn't hit them."

TODAY: Rockies at Marlins, 11:10 a.m., KTVD-20
Part of the reason Glendon Rusch (4-3, 5.70 ERA) is a Rockie can be traced to his ineffectiveness against the Marlins while red lines face thyroid pitching for San Diego. Florida tagged face cream omega omega him for three earned runs in a May 4 relief appearance, accelerating his release. Rusch's problems against the Marlins this year notwithstanding, he has always pitched well at Dolphin Stadium (2.01 ERA in 34 2/3 innings). The last time the Rockies saw Scott Olsen (6-6, 4.04), he was bailing in Colorado's wild 18-17 victory on July 4. Olsen posted a 6.07 ERA in July as foes batted .300 against him. Troy E.
