| Wes Craven's THE SEPRENT AND THE RAINBOW 4 Voodotastic Cheeses CHARACTERS Denis Allan: Anthropologist Heros guy Has his soul stolen Marielle: Love intrest Guides Denis around Haiti Dargent: Bad Voodo Priest Special Police All around Arse Lucien: Information provider Mozart: Makes Zombie Powder Christophe: Was zombified Plot Woah, I actually liked this movie more for it's plot and premise than for it's scares. The movie was actually filmed Haiti so the surroundings felt genuine and all the voodo used wasn't out of place. Denis is sent on a job to Haiti to find a drug that is saidto simulate death. He does go on this job and in Haiti he meets Merielle. He also hooks up with Mozart and Lucien. He's looking for Christophe, because he can still talk after being zombified. He finds out too much and winds up in a trail of lies, magic, and death. In doing so he ends up getting on the bad side of Dargent who decides to torture him, frame him for murder, posses him, and make his life a living hell. After having many horrible and frightning visions he ends up getting the powder from Mozart, but is framed for murder and forced back to America. He decides to go back because Dargent is still trying to kill him with voodo, and he has to save Merielle. SFX The Speciel Effects are actually believable even though they're far fetched. They work because the complex animated effects are used at a minimum. The creature effects are really creepy. In one scene where Denis is having a dream his room suddenly closes and turns into a coffin. It then starts to fill up with blood while he's being buried alive. The effects they use to echieve things like this work wonderfuly. GORE A bunch of rotting corpses Decapitated heads A pig with it's blood painted on the walls Blood Scary zombie arms What I Learned Bill Pullman (Denis) can act well. Haiti is 85% Catholic and 110% voodo. (That's in the movie) Voodo priests are not people who you want to be angry at you. Just because pictures are on the back of the video box doesn't mean that they're in the movie. Bottom Line THE SERPENT AND THE RAINBOW is probably the Wes Craven movie with the most plot. It engrossed me with a sense of dread from start to finish. It was a smart thing on Mr. Craven's part to not fill the movie with gore; that would have detracted from the overall seriousness of the film. This is amore adult horror film than many because it relies on fearful imagery and plot to keep the watcher entertained, instead of cheep thrills and gore. I think that it is good when movies like this are made; it reminds you that all horror movies aren't just mindless flicks. The CHEESE KING says that THE SERPENT AND THE RAINBOW is a must view. It may be hard to find though, becuase the only place that I have seen it is at my local library. |
