He also worked at Dominion Bridge as a junior draftsman. After graduating near the top of his class in 1965 he moved to the Vancouver area of British Columbia to find work. He found it at Savage and MacMillan Ltd., Hallmark Engineering Ltd., Great West Steel Industries Co. Ltd., Zenith Steel and Don Harris Drafting, among others.
In 1978 he decided to try working in a steel fabricating plant. He joined McKinnon Welding Ltd. where his duties included detailing, estimating, geometry calculations, plate developments, purchasing and shipping.
In 1981 he decided it was time to start his own detailing firm and Norm's Drafting was born. Norm has successfully completed five AutoCAD classes at the British Columbia Institute of Technology and has instructed more than fifty detailers in the use of AutoCAD.
