Norman Foo

Norman Pic I am an Emeritus Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia. Prior to my move to UNSW I held a personal chair as Professor of Knowledge Systems in the University of Sydney. My research areas are AI issues in knowledge representation and reasoning, particularly nonmonotonic logics, logic programming, social agents, and computational philosophy of science. I have interests in mathematical systems theory and complexity.

My Chinese name ( ) in pinyin is Hu2 Yao4 Quan2, and in Hakka is Foo Yeow Khean .

I was born and raised in Malaysia, completed high school at the Victoria Institution, and graduated BE, ME in Electrical Engineering from Canterbury, NZ, and MA, PhD in Computer and Communication Sciences from Michigan (Ann Arbor). In between I was an engineer in Telecom Malaysia. I have also worked in IBM Research New York, taught in the Watson School of the State Univ of New York, Binghamton, and been a Visiting Professor in the Universities of Birmingham and Bath, UK.

Please see my work home page for more details. Alumni of the Victoria Institution can visit a link 'Biographical Anecdotes' which has accounts of my years there.

Colleagues

In my research I work with many people. You can see in the following link who are my Australian collaborators

Non-professional interests

Political economy, history, philosophy, cognitive science and social science. I listen to chamber music and am a member of the Australian Greens.

If you want to know one of the reasons for the end of the fascistic Howard government in Australia when it was booted out by the people in the November 2007 election, this is a succinct depiction by one of my favorite political cartoonists.

Do you have difficulty looking for non-mainstream media information that carries insights different from the "conventional wisdom" (Galbraith)? Look no more! Counterpunch is what you seek. The current (2009) international finance crisis was caused by the sustained attack on regulatory frameworks starting with Reagan and Thatcher, continued by Greenspan, culminating in the duplicity of the Wall Street executives and the so-called ranking agencies like Moodys. See what the common people now think of these free-market fundamentalists.

Search for me (Norman Foo) in Facebook for gossipy stuff.
