Mary is lost in a deep forest. Itfs getting cold
and dark and you donft know what to do. Suddenly, you reach an old, crumbling
house. You knock on the door and........
gIs anyone there...Is anyone there?h Mary yelled. Then,
the door was opened slowly.
There, an old, refind woman was standing. She said,
gHi. I've been waiting for you,h
Mary thought this woman took her for an other
person. So, she said,h Hellocbut Ifm
Afraid youfre taking me for someone else. My name
is Mary.h gI know, Mary. Ifve waited for you,h old woman said. gAnd my name is
also Mary,h she said with a smile, and welcomed her. Young Mary didnft
understand what happened to her, she felt easy, though. Old Mary made her hot
tea and scones. Young Mary noticed that they taste like her motherfs.
After she felt at ease, old Mary said to her. gWell, I wonft ask why you
came here. And donft ask about myself, either. But remember this, only you can
make your life here enjoyable or hard, okay?h Young Mary nodded. gGood. Well, why
donft you go out and meet your friends?h gccmy friends?h gYes.h@
Then, she went out. What she met first was a very
big tree. gWow, How big! cHi, big tree!h Mary said it half jokingly. But that
tree replied. gHi, Mary. How are you?h g! ?h She was so amazed and opened her
mouth finally. gYou can talk?h gOf course, Mary,h tree said. gWhy do you know
my name?h g Because you told me before,h the tree said so gently. gDid I? Youfre
kidding. I havenft met you before.h gYou think so?h the tree asked. Mary left
there saying, gYes, I do!h
Then, she met the small humming bird who was
singing with very clear voice. Mary was moved by his song, and began to sing
imitating him. They were singing together for a while. Mary has never
experienced such a pleasure. The humming bird stopped his song suddenly and
asked her, gYou can sing very good. You love singing?h Mary couldnft answer.
She left there, murmuring, gI love singing?hcSuddenly, she remembered that she
was always singing with her mother when she was a child. And she got the
feeling that Mary and her mother had come here, this forest. But she couldnft
recall about that memory.
Then,
she arrived at a cake shop while she was trying to recall about her mother. gWow,
what a good smell!h she said unconsciously. Then an old man came to her,
saying, gThank you, Mary.h She was not surprised at his wards. Surprised was
the old man. Because the girl asked him, gAre you Mike?h The man answered
gently, gYes, Ifm Mike. Do you remember us?h gYes,h said Mary with a smile.@Now
she surely remembered that when she was small, her mother and her were living
in old Maryfs house. And they were talking with trees, singing with birds and
enjoying Mikefs cakes and cookies. The only problem left was old Mary. She
really wanted to know who she was. gIfve got to go,h she tried to start
running. gWait!h Mike said. gPresent for YOUctwo Maries.h It was such a nice
present---so many cookies in a basket. gThanks a lot, Mike,h she said and began
to run. gSee you, Mary,h Mike said.
Mary
got to old Maryfs house, and opened the door. Old Mary was sitting in the chair,
and said, gHi, Mary. You remembered something important, didnft you?h gYes,
thatfs right. I believed that you know.h Young Mary answered. gBecause you know
everything about me cI wonder ccif you are...?h
gMary,h
old Mary said with gentle eyes. gYou have been weak, selfish girl. But you must
be able to be stronger. Because you have so many friends who wish your
happiness.h Big tears ran down her cheeks. gGo hone, Mary. Your mother may be
looking for you. You can find your way.h Young Mary said good-bye in a tearful
voice. gMary, Ifll be able to see you someday?h Old Mary answered, gProbably.h gThank
you for telling me,h said young Mary and left there. The humming bird asked old
Mary, gWhen will she meet herself in the future?h gHey, youfre Mr. nice guy! Of
course it is a secret,h said Mary.
