My Goal in the Future
Hosokawa Takanori
I'm a first year student at Nishi high school. I'm just an ordinary student, doing almost the same things as other students everyday . But I've decided to do one thing that is in my heart. I want to be an English teacher. Today I'd like to talk to you about it.
Why do I want to be a teacher? Firstly, it is because I have met many good teachers so far who share my ideals. These teachers always accept students. They are always willing to meet with me, and give me advice. When I was in the sixth year in elementary school, a male teacher took charge of our class. I was afraid of him at first, but he was funny and kind, and made jokes during our lessons. I first became interested in teaching because of him.
Secondly, in my junior high school, the teachers of the English club gave me guidance, especially when we had the speech contest. They helped me practice late into the evening everyday. Throughout the club, I talked with many ALTs. At first, I wasn't able to understand them. But, by my third year I could speak like this, gHi, how are you today?hgI had six lessons.hgOh, you must be tired.hgVery.hHow wonderful it is to talk with people from different countries in the same language! Now, when I speak with ALTs without teachers' aid, I feel more natural. English is certainly difficult, but, I enjoy learning the language.
Thirdly, English always teaches me something, for example, "Come-On-In Eigoka" at Nishi high school. This is an open-school for grown-ups to learn English conversation. I join it as an assistant with friends every week. The students, some in their 70's, take the lessons seriously and delightfully. No matter how old they are, their attitude to try to learn English is excellent. They seem to be looking for something themselves. They make me want to try the interesting lessons that I've had in my mind.
Not only in English, but also in other subjects, my favorite lessons keep me interested. Class is fun when the teachers of our lessons understand students. These teachers take sides with students, and there are never walls between us. My classmates also make my lessons interesting. We are from all over Kochi. We have various personalities, and we are all part of the special English course that gathers many excited students every year.
It has only been three years since I started studying English. I have so many things I don't know yet, but I will keep on working to achieve my goal of learning English and becoming a teacher. Among the many school subjects, I'd like to teach English because it is a challenge. Even if something is difficult, you can enjoy it if you are interested. Before Ms.Takahashi, the marathon runner, broke the world's record, she said, gI want to make my race exciting for spectators and myself.hRunning a marathon was exciting for her. Her joy helps her accomplish each marathon. I remember how happy I felt when I could first speak with ALTs in English. Someday I want to help future students enjoy learning English.
YOU CAN DO IT!!
By Okabayashi Yuko
Spring is a season for meeting. This spring, I became a high school student and I was very excited to meet new friends.
But, I hit a snag.
When I was in junior high school, I was taught etiquette, common sense, and greetings by my teachers. I thought these things would be used at my high school, but I was surprised to learn how few people greet each other, though. Many students don't use honorific for teachers, they go to the bathroom in groups, they take naps during classes, and they don't clean. All these things were a new experience for me. So I asked a friend of mine, "Why don't you clean? " she answered, " What!? Why don't I clean? That's because I don't like it. Do you like cleaning? " I was surprised and confused to hear the question, because I don't like cleaning but I think I must do it.
In this way, my values are different from that of my friends'. Gradually, the difference became such a big problem that I began to stay away from them. I was nervous and felt like I couldn't tell them my feelings.
To make matters worse, I was living apart from my parents and couldn't vent my feelings to anyone. I was at a loss to do not only housework but also my school assignments. I often found myself alone, and I thought nobody understood my feelings. Then, a woman appeared who helped me. She was my ALT, and my precious friend in my junior high school days. After listening to my worries, she said to me, " Don't worry, Yuko. You are a great and wonderful person. You will soon have many many wonderful friends who will know how special you are !! I think you are very special. You can do it!!" I was glad to hear she understood my feelings.
I talked to my mother, too. She came to meet me and said, " I'm sorry, you had nobody to listen to what you were thinking. How lonely you must have been! " When I heard this, I cried. I had been waiting for these words. I was dependent on my mother and I felt better in my heart.
Then one day, I decided to talk about what I had learned from this experience with my classmates. At first, I was afraid of what they would say, but when I finished talking, my friends came running to me and said, " Why didn't you say so earlier? We are friends, aren't we? " and " I'm sorry I didn't notice your feelings." I shed tears of joy. I had believed my friends would never understand me, so from the start, I had given up on telling them how I felt, I wish I would have told them my feelings earlier.
Human relations are more difficult to me than solving math questions, because there is neither a formula nor a manual for it. If you run into a problem, don't give up and don't run away from it. Have the courage to confront your problem. Let's step forward for ourselves. Before you give up, you should have the will to express your feelings to others, no matter who they are; foreigners, people who live far away from you or people who are not so close to you. You can do it!!
I would like finally to thank my friends for helping me find an important thing. I became stronger. Now I can say I love you!
