| Day 6 of the NAABL season was a lot less hectic than last week's games but the teams played tough as usual. All the teams have shown marked improvement since the beginning of the season and hopefully this improvement will be carried over into the next season. The Raptors, led by the Mel Right show, kept their winning streak going with a victory over the Dope Squad. Skyhigh outlasted the Sharks to get back to .500 for the season. United continued their league dominance by defeating the faltering Red Storm. The Passions improved their playoff rank and finally put a winning streak together by outplaying the G Stars. With just one more regular season game remaining, the playoff teams are practically set. Barring some unusual circumstances i.e. major upsets AND major blowouts, the playoff teams will be United, Red Storm, Passions, and Raptors. The rest of the teams will be playing for pride and bragging rights. With the season winding down, the NAABL looks forward to next season. The inaugural season was highly succesful but there is always room for improvement. As always, suggestions are always appreciated and taken into the highest consideration. Ever since this league started it has been considered OUR LEAGUE, the community's league. It is more than basketball. It is about Asians reaching out to other cultures and showing the community that we can put together something important and meaningful. It is about meeting other people outside our comfort zones and realizing we are more alike than different. Even if noone else feels this way about the league, I continue to do so and it has been a rewarding and enlightening experience. The NAABL is always open to comments, questions, or complaints, because they are what makes the league mo better. Just hit up [email protected]. Good luck to all the teams and see you at the gym. | Things continue to get interesting in the NAABL especially amongst the top half teams. All the playoff teams are pretty much set unless Skyhigh blows out United real bad (by about 35 or 40 pts). And their is another real big blowout (by about 35 or 40 pts) in the Raptors-Passions game. Neither scenario seems too likely (prove me wrong if you want to). The only certain thing in the league right now is that United will bust its ass every game as they continue their march to the first NAABL championship. There is temporarily a three-way tie for 2nd place between the 4-2 Red Storm, Passions, and Raptors. This will be temporary because Passions and Raptors will face each other for their last regular season game. This game will decide the #3 and #4 seeds in the playoffs. It could even decide the #2 seed if the Sharks come up with a huge upset over the Red Storm. Anything could happen. But most likely its gonna be United, Red Storm, Passions, and Raptors. So get ready for the stretch run yall. |
The Raptors continued to prove that their hot streak isnt a fluke by handing the Dope Squad a Game 1 loss, 48-33. Mel Right once again paced the Raptors offense by scoring 9 pts (2 threes) in the first half and then attacking the rim constantly in the second half (6/8 FTs in the second half) for which Dope Squad had no answer. Right finished with 22 pts, 3 threes, 7/10 FTs. Dope Squad kept it close for most of the game--as they always do-- with Jose Malpaya (13 pts, 1/4 FTs) and Jerome Kubalewski (10 pts, 2/5 FTs) leading the way. Raptors only started to build a significant lead when the Dope Squad attempted a comeback by hoisting up threes late in the game--a strategy which failed bitterly. They made no threes for the day. They hardly made as many free throws, begging not to be fouled-- 5 for 20 (25%) for the day from the charity stripe. Right didnt do it alone though. Key team defensive stops and big-time play from Dave Ericchetto (14 pts,2/3) were the nails in the coffin for the Dope Squad. NOTES: *Raptors are on a 4 game win streak. *Of Dope Squad's five losses, this is there worst: 15 points. They previously lost to Red Storm by 8 pts. And a pair of 3 pt losses to Skyhigh and United. *Dope Squad shoots a league-worst 41% FTs. The Raptors face the Passions in an early morning matchup between two playoff bound teams playing for playoff seeding. Dope Squad will atempt to take out their frustrations on the G Stars as both teams will be playing to get out of the league cellar.
In Game 2, Skyhigh and Sharks duked it out in a defensive struggle but Skyhigh held their own defeating the Sharks 32-27. For the second straight week the Sharks got off to a great start as they took a 14-9 lead into the half with good team defense and team play. Emmet Forbes led the Shark attack with 10 pts for the game and Alex Lee added 5 pts and a bunch of big blocks to keep Skyhigh from getting in the lane. But Skyhigh adjusted and went to an aerial attack in the second half hitting 3 threes to spark a 23 pt half to give the Sharks another L. All of Skyhigh's players got a peice of the action with the leading scorers being Derek Brewington (8 pts, 2/4 FTs) and Dennis Limpin (7 pts, 1 three). NOTES: *Skyhigh ends a 3 game losing streak. *Sharks are in a 4 game skid. *Skyhigh went 9/18 FTs. Sharks went 2/8 FTs. Both teams face tough teams next week. Skyhigh will attempt to hand United their first defeat of the season next week. Sharks will have to face a pissed off Red Storm.
Game 3, a highly anticipated matchup, United continued to dominate the NAABL circuit with an impressive all-around team performance against the suddenly vulnerable Red Storm, 60-53. Andy Sanderson blazed em from the outside with 16 pts, 3 threes, 3/5 FTs. Sanderson's hot shooting exposed the Storm's weak belly as United easily pounded down low to Joy Arenas (12 pts, 4/5 FTs) and also opened the lane up for Kokoy Marisigan (11pts, 5/5 FTs) and Kenny Hermoso (11pts). The Storm's only inside presence at either end of the court was Elfner DeGuia whose first 7 pts came from the line (13 pts, 7/8 FTs). United took advantage of a hacking Storm defense by going 18/26 FTs. The Storm also shot well from the line, but not quite as often 10/15 FTs. The Red Storm was hot from beyond the arc splashing 9 threes but United's tough inside play and domination of the boards seemed to be the Storms downfall. Ron Gozum (13 pts, 3 threes, 2/3 FTs), Vance Hayes (12 pts, 2 threes), and Jody Lowe (3 threes) all hit big threes to keep it interesting as Red Storm went off for a 35 pt second half, but United's damage had already been done as their perfect season remains intact. NOTES: *All of United's 8 players scored. 5 of 10 Red Storm players scored. *Storm's Chev Zaporteza, the league's top three point shooter, had no points and 4 fouls in the game. *Red Storm played their second straight game without their leading scorer Joe Flores (14.3 pts/gm). United is the regular season champs regardless of what happens next week against Skyhigh. Red Storm will try to get their groove back against the Sharks.
It took a while for them to give in but the G Stars eventually folded to the Passions, 67-40, in the final game of the day. Big first half play by Bugs Relopez (13 first half pts; 15 pts, 5/5 FTs for the game) and Jun Madera (10 pts and 3 threes in the first half; 12 pts for the game) gave the Passions the upperhand in the first half, but the G Stars stayed stubborn to remain behind 30-15 in the first half. G Stars played inspired ball in the second half managing to come within 8 pts early in the second half. But after the G Stars offensive catalyst BJ Macalino fouled out with about 12 minutes left Passions began to beat them into submission. It didnt help their cause that Passion's Ryan Driggers saved all of his 19 pts, 3/3 FTs for the second half, scorching them from inside and out. Phil Ratcliffe led the G Star attack with 13 pts, 3/6 FTs and JR Macalino's 11 pts. NOTES: *27 point Passion victory gained them the third seed in the playoffs for now. *Passions shot 15/20 FTs. G Stars shot 3/6 FTs. Passions prepare to battle it out with the Raptors next week in a battle of playoff teams. The G Stars see if they can get out of the cellar with a win against the Dope Squad.
