| 25 November 2002 Week 5 games failed to disappoint as power rankings in the NAABL continue to flip flop. The Raptors find themselves alone atop the standings after they survived a hard fought contest in which they needed a last second three point bucket to win the game against Team VA. With this loss, Team VA's playoff chances are starting to fade but their destiny is in their hands as they look forward to a Week 7 matchup against the Mavericks who, for now, claim the fourth and final spot in the playoffs. Previoiusly undefeated Maymar, a team which has seemed to lack passion the last few weeks, failed to put up enough points against the Wolfpacks high-powered offense. If not for a Week 2 two-point loss to the Raptors, Wolfpack would have to be the undeniable favorite to win the whole thing. But the loss happened and they showed they could be beat. In the meantime, they look like a scary team to face in the playoffs. The Mavs survived in overtime against the Dope Squad to overtake Team VA in the standings. Dope Squad played tough ball for the duration of the game and could have done Team VA a favor if they hit the front end of some one-and-one foul shots in the final minute with the game tied. But they failed to convert and the Mavs wore them down in extra time. In a battle of the winless, Sharks earned their first victory of the season against the Lightning. It wasn't pretty but it was a win. And it must feel good after 4 consecutive losses. The Sharks, though out of playoff contention, find themselves 6th in the standings and out of the cellar. For all teams concerned, the rankings for the postseason are determined by the win-loss record, obviously. But in the instance that two teams have the same record at the end of the regular season, then the higher seed is determined by how those two teams fared in the regular season. For example, if Team VA and the Mavs both have 4 wins and 3 losses at the end of Week 7, then the higher seed is the team which won the regular season match up. An instance of this rule may occur in Week 7 when those two teams actually meet. The last determiner of postseason rankings, in the event that more than two teams have equal records, is the point differential. These rules were created for the 2001 season and are the same for this year. If any team has any other questions about the rules and regulations, let us know. For now the NAABL would like to wish everyone out there a pleasant and restful Thanksgiving holiday. That is, until Sunday when players need to shake off all that turkey adobo and get back to grinding it out on the hardwood. Thanks to everyone out there who makes this league go. Especially the fans and spectators who come out to watch these guys play. The end of the season is coming around quick and we'd like to see more people come out and support not only the teams playing, but to support this unique league which attempts to extend its hand to the rest of the community in a fun, friendly, and exciting atmosphere. So far we have succeeded by being a very diverse league with all kinds of people playing and watching in the stands, different generations represented from the very young (about 14 years old) to the VERY old (39 years old), and many different levels of basketball experiences and levels of play. Support from everyone is always appreciated, even if you came out to watch just one game. Thanks to all. Good luck to all the teams this coming Sunday. And stick around for Game 4 which features the Mavs vs. Wolfpack. The Mavs could make things very interesting with a win over the Pack. As always: Comments? Questions? Concerns? Complaints? Holla at us at [email protected] or sign the guestbook. Just keep the guestbook clean, okay? You can curse at me by email if you need to. |
