It's getting hot in the NAABL.  Maymar and the Raptors are tied for first atop the standings after 3 weeks of play but there are other contenders out there ready to take them down.  The Mavericks are starting to look scary after a season-high 78 point outburst last Sunday.  After last week's tough loss against the Raptors, the Wolfpack earned an encouraging victory over Team VA, led by NAABL Player of the Week, Chev Zaporteza.  And as for Team VA things aren't looking so good for them early in the season with 2 losses under their belt.  But remember that last year's champions, the Passions, had a rocky start but finished the season off in championship fashion.  The Dope Squad seek their second win and hope to regain the fire that kept them competitive last season.  And the Sharks and the Lightning continue to improve and gel as a team although their win columns remain blank.

Although this website has been slacking with the updates, things continue to run smoothly for the league.  But the hard part of the year is over for me and now I can dedicate more time to this webpage.  Stats and recaps will be updated weekly in a timely manner.  If any names are spelled wrong please let us know.  That goes for any mistakes anyone may see on the webpage.  We ain't perfect.

Some notes:

SCOREBOARD!!!   After much bee-yatchin the NAABL provides.  Big up to JEROME GUANLAO for hooking us up with the excellent scoreboard.  It makes what we were doing before seem cheap as hell.  (Which it was.  But it worked.)  Now that there is a scoreboard everyone is going to play better and score more points and win more games...  Yeah right.  It just looks good and professional.  Good look Jerome.
UNIFORMS!!!   Hey guys.  NUMBERS ON YOUR UNIFORMS and MATCHING COLORS!!!  It's not hard.  Even though you guys make it seem hard.  Get a crayon or something, pick a number and write it on.  Oh yeah.  And make sure the color of your little hanes t-shirt matches your buddies color OKAY?  We can't have a bunch of 0's and 00's on the court.  Enough of that.  You guys prove to me how smart you are okay.
Remember: No new players will be added to team rosters under penalty of forfeit.  Also, 3 technical fouls during the season leads to 1 game suspension. A 4th technical results in expulsion from league with no replacement player allowed.

Thanks to everyone behind the scenes who make the league work.  The scorers: Antonette Dionisio, Rachel Dionisio, Winston Escalante and Ryan Smith.  Concessions and statistician: Joanne Honrada.  And co-director, Don Dimaiwat, for handling miscellaneous biz.  And thanks to the fans and spectators for showing support and interest in what we are doing.

If anyone has any questions, comments, concerns, or suggestions that will make the league mo better, holla at us:  [email protected] or sign the guest book.  Please just keep it clean. Do it for the kids.

See you Sunday.

It's on now.  3 weeks into the NAABL season and it looks like anything can happen.  The top teams are proving themselves on the court with grit and determination while a lot of the losers are losing because of lackluster play and just good old fashioned quitting.  Gotta get it together fellas.  Before you find yourselves out the back door when playoffs rolls around.
The Mavericks through their weight around in this game.  After leading 38-25 at the half, the Mavs finally used their size advantage outscoring the Sharks 40-13 in the second half.  The Mavs finished with the highest point total so far this year.  Four players finished with double figures and their interior defense was stifling.  Plenty of Sharks' shots never made it to the rim.  Anthony Gaviola led the Mavs in scoring with 17 and Joe Burgess chipped in 15.  Manuel Wilson tried to keep his boys in it by sinking 3 threes (finishing with 9 pts) but it was not nearly enough.

Next week the 2-1 Mavericks will test the
3-0 Raptors' winning streak.  The Sharks will try to shake off this defeat and put up a better effort against undefeated Maymar.
The Lightning were in this game the whole way but failed to get over the hump.  Maymar played the game lackadaisically but it was just enough against the winless Lightning.  It seemed like Maymar PTP'er Joy Arenas was taking a break this week from banging on the inside and wanted to test his range, draining 3 threes and finishing with 14.  Terry Eusebio led all scorers with 16 pts but the rest of the team couldn't pick up the slack.  The Lightning went to the free throw line 1 time all day, unable to effectively attack the basket.  Maymar's Cocoy Marasigan added 10 pts and Lightning's Will Pagtalunan contributed 2 threes to the Lightning cause.

3-0 Maymar will face the winless Sharks in Week 4.  The winless Lightning will be pitted against the Wolfpack.
After both of these teams lost in Week 2, this was an important battle to see where both of them would stand in the NAABL season.  After the game the Wolfpack looked like a revitalized and dangerous team and Team VA looked puzzled to have 2 losses so early in the season.  In the first half, Team VA got off to a hot start while most Wolfpack shots missed their mark.  But the Wolfpack eventually found their game and took a slim 24-22 lead into halftime.  The two teams continued to battle in the second half but a barrage of three pointers from Chev Zaporteza seemed to slowly break Team VA's will.  Chev hit 5 three pointers in the second half with a couple of bombs from far out in the waning seconds of the game.  Team VA had balanced scoring with Ryan Driggers, Erwin Deguia, and Jeremy Calazara all scoring 10.  But it was not enough.

The 2-1 Wolfpack will try to keep it going versus a vulnerable Lightning squad.  1-2 Team VA will see if they can get it together against the Dope Squad.
The Raptors played with just one person on the bench but managed to outlast, outhustle, and outplay the Dope Squad anyway.  The Raptors held on to a 9 point lead most of the game while Dope Squad tried to figure out how they could mount a comeback.  Man-to-man defensive pressure almost got them back in the game but a big Raptor defensive play or big bucket usually killed all hopes of any comeback late in the game.  The Raptors are the most energetic team in the league, always hustling on defense and and always testing the other teams D by relentlessly pushing the ball up court to get easy baskets.  Raptors' Mel Wright led all scorers with 18 pts, 3 threes, and 4/5 from the line.  Jazz Zapata led the Dope Squad with 8 pts.  Don't let the non-Asian controversy distract you.  These guys have PTP'ers but they play like a team.  I've seen so-called teams with great individual players but they lose.  This is a good TEAM.

3-0 Raptors will see what they can do against a big lineup like the Mavs on Sunday.  1-2 Dope Squad will try to shake off its mercurial ways against Team VA.
