Spotlight: Worst Estates in Northampton

Spring Boroughs according to a Census survey is the most deprived ward in Northamptonshire, the ward features in the Top 5% of the most deprived estates in England.
In 1994, Bellinge, in the eastern district, had the worst crime rate in Northamptonshire, in 1996 the crime rate was five times the national average. The main hub of this crime was former pub the Deer's Leap on Billingmead Square, a depressing and troubled place to be. In Late 1996 problems reached boiling point after police tried to crack down on drug dealing which led to a mass riot including petrol bombs and missiles been thrown. The flats were than demolished along with the pub and the square was renamed Fieldmill Square.
Whilst Bellinge gained it's reputation in the early and mid 90s, Blackthorn took over top honours in the late 90s. This estate, also in the eastern district had a shocking crime rate which was an astonishing 12 times the national average, that's 87.2 per 1000 people involved in crime in the year 2000 and 12% of the whole of Northamptonshire's crime.
After Blackthorn's clear up, Briar Hill was the focal point of the police in 2000, the slum estate west of Far Cotton didn't have to high rates of crime Blackthorn did but wasn't a great place to be found. The crime rate in 1999 stood at 548.
By 2002, Semilong and Spring Boroughs had got to breaking point, the red light district of Northampton was swamped in robbery/sex/drugs and violence, eventually crime was reduced by 32%.
Kings Heath in 2003, was next after spates of murders and harrowing violent incidents aswell as Rectory Farm.
Eventually, Thorplands in 2005 became a hub of crime, concentrating back to the eastern district.
