Basic Spanish Introduction

This page is intended to help those who have never studied Spanish and need help beginning their quest to learn Spanish.

Verbs

All verbs end in "AR", "ER", or "IR" and are known to be in the infinitive form.  The infinitive is another way of saying "to (blank)."  It takes any verb (run, play, jump) and adds the word "to" in front of it (to run, to play, to jump).  For example, "bailar", which means to dance, "beber" which means to drink, and "decir" which means to say.  There are six main ways to conjugate a verb in Spanish: yo, tú, él/ella/Vd., nosotros, vosotros, ellos/Vds.  This translates to: I, you, he/she/it, we/us, you guys, and them.  (Note that Vd. is a formal way to talk to someone while tú is someone not formal).  Conjugating a verb changes it so that it describes someone or something.  This is done by taking the "AR", "ER", or "IR" off the end of the verb and placing a different ending at the end so the word makes sense.  For example, bailar is to dance, bailo, means I dance because bailar is conjugated it the yo form (present tense) which changes the meaning of the verb.
