OUR WHITTER TRIP
In August, 2000 my husband, Bill and I joined my daugther and her family for a trip to Whitter. This was our first trip through the recently opened tunnel. Before this only the train traveled through this tunnel.
Following are some photos we took on this trip.
Portage Glacier, before we entered the tunnel

Going through the tunnel is quiet the experience. The walls are so close you culd reach out and touch them. This road was built between, or either each side of the railroad tracks.
The light at the end of the tunnel!

When we arrived out the end of the tunnel, we saw many old glacier high up in the mountains.

Upon arriving in Whitter, we were completely surrounded by tall mountains. It was dark and looked like rain. But so very beautiful. Residents there told us the weather was like that much of the time. These folks measure their snowfall in feet, not inches.
I'm not sure what this building was originally used for, but it has the "Pay Station" in front of it.

My family paying our fee for parking.

This flag on top of one of the buildings, was waving gracefully in the wind, with the lovely mountain as a backdrop.

This is what is left of the old Army Barracks. This building was damaged heavily by the big earthquake. It just stands there as a reminder of that terrible time.
I understand there are plans to tear it down and build something else, but not sure what.

This rainbow was a stark contrast to the dark mountain. You can see the many mask of the sail boats, in the dock.

We found a small cafe and went in for a snack. This was our view out the window. One lone boat on the way in. It was getting late in the afternoon by this time.

Leaving the cafe, we saw this reindeer next to a little shop. This is my granddaughter petting him.

We wondered around this small village, waiting for time to go back through the tunnel. Traffic is scheduled and only allowed when there is no train on the tracks.Once we were back through, we again saw the backside of Portage glacier with a few bergs floating about.

We stopped at a viewing area, about a mile from the glacier, to watch the salmon spawning. Our waters are so clear, one can see them well. However it's not always possible to get a clear picture. Here are just two of the ones I took.

This is a real big one that came near the surface.

Finally here is one of me and my husband.
