| Quite a few years ago...I was a fresh faced kid goin through Marine Corps boot camp. One of the first things they taught us...was that anyone in a uniform was like an officer for the duration of boot camp...and any order given by anyone in uniform better be followed without question. It just happened to be...that out on the drill field there was a boulder...as big as a two story house. One day...when we went out for drill...my DI (drill instructor) came up to me...asked me if I saw the boulder...I said yes maam I do...she said...go move it. My mind was sayin...ya right...but I replyed yes maam...and without question. Of course I knew that I couldnt move that boulder...but I also knew that I couldnt just pretend to try either. I put my back into it...everythin I had...and she watched for the next 20 to 30 minutes while I sweated and strained. Finally I felt a tap on my shoulder...and she told me to stop...then came the question...what did you accomplish? I looked at her and at the boulder then replied...nothin maam...the boulder is still there. Her response to that has stayed with me all my life...she said...wrong...you tryed...the only time you truely fail...is when you dont try. She taught me one of the most invaluable lessons of my life that day...Im very greatful for it. Its not that I havent had things Ive found that I couldnt do...or do well...but since that day...not because I didnt try. |
