| Why did I trust you with such a delicate operation? Why? Answer Me!" Lady Verans green eyes flashed in the growing storm. Lady Veran was Mistress in the Black Tower. Her mute 2-in command stood before her bearing the blows from her whiplike tongue. "You can't even deliver three live creatures to me." She turned to glare imperiously at the two bound Abbeybeasts in front of her chair. " The Master asked for three beasts and these two aren't even healthy." Turning she stalked out of the hall. Leaving a dumb stricken stoat and feeble prisoners in her wake. "Come Gligger" When they were alone the two squirrel prisoners turned to look at one another. The maid was first to speak,"I think that I can untie my bonds if....ah Ha .....got it." She jumped to her feet then bent busying herself with untying her companions ties. He stood shakily,"I'm indebt to you more than you know Tifra." "Don't flatter me Ralph." They walked leaning on one another out of the hall where Tifra gently placed Ralph on a broken column. He hadn't faired as well as she had on the trip there. Now his time had come and she was devasated. As she cast about for words a black feathered arrow eased his passing. Turning she fled into a small hole that lead to the dungeons. The enemy followed hard. She slammed the door on the face of a rat who screamed. His paw had become smashed by the heavy door. Turning from the sight she ran to the wall. Two of the bricks of the foundation were missing. In a spilt second she hardened her resolve and drew a breath. She leaned all her weight upon a stone not as firmly inlayed as its mates and pushed. The building gave over head. We now remeber her brave act of unselfishness. She gave her life for ours so we could live at peace with the world. r we will remember the valiant Tifra no matter what. By Anya of the Daredevil Dibbuns Very nice! 14 Rose leaves. |
| It had been storming for 3 days. The Lady Veran was losing patience. "Why are these troops not leaving??? Afraid of a little rain?" She shouted to her 2nd-in-command stoat Gligger Bootnose. Gligger -if not being mute- was strong and loyal. These were the reasons he was 2nd in command. Without waiting for an answer, she called for Gliggers mate, Ditther. She repeated her problem to Ditther. "But milady, they argue that they don't got enough vittles. Neither do I..." Muttered Ditther. "OH SHUT UP YOU WORTHLESS PEICE OF A STOAT!!!" She smiled, "vittles, that's it! I have a plan! Gligger, go out and bring Drokel." She commanded him. If he could, Gligger would have screamed, having to take Drokel out by himself. But, he couldn't so he just went off to do it. Ditther sighed in relief of not having to do it. ************************** Tifra was known to go out into the woods for long periods of time. She and her friend Ralph were known as wanderers through out Redwall. But today, niether she nor Ralph were found in the Abbey or even in the woods! She and Ralph had bumbled off to the North Woods, well known as "The Dark Woods" because of rumors about the Dark Castle and it's lair of Vermin there. They had been walking for a while in complete scilence when suddenley "CRACKKK". Tifra stopped in her tracks. She looked behind at Ralph, who was looking very guilty standing on a cracked tree branch. "Ralph, you have GOT to be more carefull." Ralph stared as if in a trance straight behind her. "Ralph what's wro-" Tifra had turned around and froze when she saw the sight that met her. A vermin, a stoat was standing in front of her with his sword pointed at her. He mointened to them to come after him and they did. Tifra kicked Ralph and muttered "I guess the rumors about vermin in the forest were true." Suddenley, she was hit hard in her head from behind, and crumpled to the floor. * * * Lady Veran was in a happy mood, having caught two beasts laden with good vittles, she allowed herself another bite at the delicious bread from the packs of Tifra and Ralph, who were now on the floor in the corner of her room. They would not talk but she knew tht the best way to bribe someone is when he is hungry and you have food. She decided to start with Ralph. "So, what are two beasts like you doing here?" She purred to them. "We are explorers" said Tifra. "Where are you from?" "Were from Redwa-" Started to say Ralph when Tifra silenced him. "You are a cruel beast and we will kill you." Said Tifra to Lady Veran. "You have embarresed me and my vermin and for that, I will kill you" she said taking up her dounle-bladed battle axe. As she struck three things happend. One, was that Tifra had undone Ralph's chains and shouted to him "RUN!" The second was that Lady Veran missed Tifra's head by an inch. Three Tifra grabbed hold of the battle-axe handle, pulled herself up and tried to take the axe from Lady Veran's hand. They both restled when Ralph came and threw his chains at Lady Veran. She stopped and ducked, giving Tifra a few seconds to recover. It was all she needed. She grabbed the weapon and sliced Lady Veran through. Running from the room, she took a peice of wood from the fire place and dropped it out of the window, into the Vermin lair. She and Ralph ran as the Vermin noticed that the lair was on fire and gave chase. But the fire had been started and had already trapped the vermin inside the lair before they could get out. It looked like Tifra and Ralph would escape when they froze. Gligger had returned and took one look and set Dorkel free. Dorkel was a female Ermine captured in the days when Lady Veran had just come to power. Scenting the smell of fresh meat she ran after Tifra and Ralph. They had run nto Mossflower woods when the Ermine stopped. It had smelt the smell of the Flitchaye. They had unkowingley walked right into the Ermine who gobled them up as quickley as possible and died from too much food the next day. Tifra and Ralph made it back top the Abey, but were given work to wash the stairs to the attic for the rest of the week. By Swiftail of the Woodland Patrollers Excellent!!! 20 Rose leaves. |
| It was drizzling, and the clouds showed no sign of letting up. Lady Veran paced in front of her three captives in the high turret. A white hare with brown spots, a squirlmaid, and an otter. "Good. But not good enough, fool!" She booted her second in command mute soat, Gligger. "I said four! I said four! Four! IS FOUR TOO MUCH TO ASK OF YOU?!" She screamed. The stoat tried to run but was booted once again by the furious fox. He would have yelped with pain, but couldn't, for he was mute. The hare leaned over to the squirlmaid and whispered horasely, "Tifra, I got a bally thing that I might be able to pick the bloomin' lock." She was silenced by a spear handle cracking on her head. She tried to lash out with her bound together hind legs at the fox that did it, but just got hit again. Tifra, the squirlmaid reassured the hare, Brown Splotch. "Don't worry. You can. Just, don't get yourself killed. You are me friend." The otter, Ralph, had gotten the friends into the mess. He was blundering along on the path, not paying heed to cover his tracks or avoid stooping twigs, or caring not to step on twigs. He sniffed and looked at them both. "Sorry, mates. I never knew, I jus', never, never, knew." Tifra tried to comfort him. "Now, now, Ralph. Brown Splotch 'as found sorta' a pick lock. We're gonna get outa 'ere soon." Lady Veran orderd the fox gaurd to take them to her throne room. The fox did so, harshly, with Gligger, and another soat, Rusha. Brown Splotch went, elbowing her captors. "Rotters. Bounders. Cads. Cadesses! Capture a bloomin' few patrollers, wot! Bad form! Bad form, I say!" "Shuttup, rabbit!" "She's a-" Ralph started. "Hare!" Brown Splotch finished, taking a blow from a whip. She dove at them savagely, but was driven back by menacing sword tips, whips, and spear handles. She wiped a smear of blood from her paw and growled. "You will pay, rotter!" The slave fox driver hit her once more and she went limp. Tifra glared at the fox and snarled. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ In Lady Veran's throne room, Ralph and Tifra sheltered the unconsious Brown Splotch. Tifra snarled at Lady Veran. "You hurt my best friend. Lest, almost killed me other best friend. Ralph, th' otter, you hurt, Brown Splotch, the hare, you almost killed. You will be taken by all three!" Lady Veran just sniffed and looked at the tabel laden with cheeses, pies, paisties, soups, drinks, trifles, salads, and preserved fruits in front of her. "Tell me, where you came from, and feast! If not, this 'hare' you call Brown Splotch will die. You refuse again, the one you call Ralph will die. Refuse again, you will die." Brown Splotch came awake and heard everything. She stepped out of the circle created by Tifra and Ralph and strained against the chains holding her ankles and wrists to the wall. "No! You will die! You, will, rotter! Cadess! Bounder! Flippin' murderur!" She dodged an amber fletched arrow shot at her side. Tifra stood up, folowed by Ralph. They all strained and yelled dire threats at Lady Veran. "You will die! Die! You will! Die!" Tifra shouted. Lady Veran ordered them back up to the turret. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ When back up on the turret, Brown Splotch picked the lock and undid her friends. She motioned for silence. They pounced upon the slave driver umercifuly. Soon, they all had a sword, or whip, or spear. Sneaking down the spiral stairs, they came to a small hole in the wall. "Well, you say, yes? No? Maybe so?" Tifra climbed into the hole and motioned for the others to do the same. "Yes. Hurry." Brown Splotch sheparded Ralph in and then went in. "Hurry, chaps!" Tifra shoved a rock in front of the hole so they wouldn't be discovered. Brown Splotch looked around and found something. It was their weapons. She took her lance, and dirk, gave Tifra her battle axe, and Ralph his willow switch whip. "Here, might be useful in times like these." They kept crawling down the passage and eventualy came to the throne room, they peeped out of the small hole and pushed the stones out. No beast was there. The tables with food were out, and the companions ate just enough to take the edge of their hunger. Breaking out into Mossflower, they told Ralph to go into Mossflower to stay safe. He did and hid in a tree, a good ways away. Going back into the tunnel, they looked around. Broken pillars, bed frames, mattreses ripped to ribbons, and bones laying all over. Brown Splotch shuddered. "Bally murderurs! Slain their own bloomin' kind, wot!" Tifra looked around in dismay. "Ur, this isn't th' way we went out." Brown Splotch hopped out of the tunnel into the room. She offered her paw to Tifra, still in the tunnel. "Well, were in, an no blinkin' vermin has shown their stupid faces, or know were flammin' well here. Come on." Tifra took her paw and she heaved her up. "Oh, well. Beggars can't be choosers....Warriors can't be choosers either." Making their way down the hall, they stopped and hid behind pillars at oncoming vermin. The one soat, Gligger, caught them, and brought them to Lady Veran. She was furious. "Fools! You will die! Fools! You can't escape my wrath in chains!" Brown Splotch reached for her dirk, while Tifra reached for her battle axe. "Well, we'll bally well die, but, you are th' fool, scum. Nooonnvvvaaalllleeeee!" Her and Tifra pounced on Lady Veran, yelling their battle cry. "Gards! Heeellllppppp!" "You have lived a coward, you will die a coward! Redwaaaaaaaallll!" Tifra shouted. Gards were swarming them in no time. Brown Splotch and Tifra were whirling about, when, they heard a cracking noise. All fighting ceaced. Looking around, Brown Splotch saw the floor beneath her starting to lean. She looked fearfully around the walls, and was greeted by cracks forming. "Hurry, Tifra! Th' bally thing's fallin' down!" Tifra took action. Grabbing Brown Splotche's paw, she dashed through the vermin racing to get to the main gate. Brown Splotch stopped and looked around once more. "What could make th' blinkin' structure fall?" Tifra answered with dashing headlong into the tunnel with Brown Splotch's paw in hers. She got her answer. The tunnel was almost flooded. It was rapidly flowing into the main fortress. "Well, that's th' flippin' answer, wot wot!" "Hurry, Brown Splotch!" Tifra urged. "No! I'm not leavin' me best friend behind in a sinkin' crumblin' fortrawotchamacollit." Brown Splotch grabbed her paw, took a deep breath, and dove under, Tifra in tow. They got outside, and started pushing the weak spot around the tunnel. The spot the fortress was in was filling up rapidly, like it was a lake. The water was up to their shoulders when the fortress gave way. Brown Splotch fell over from the strain. Tifra had lots of energy left, took the unconsious Brown Splotch on her back, and kicked to Mossflower. All vermin in the fort were dead, and the lake where the fortress was, was now slowing its rapid rising. Tifra took Brown Splotch back to Noonvale, and traveled back to Redwall with Ralph.
