This album was thought to be Aretha's Greatest. I hold this album in high esteem because of the range Aretha goes through in this album. She rocks on "Money Won't Change You" and then testifies during "People Get Ready" then purrs through "Groovin.'" You can hear from these selections that SOUL was the main thing. Even to put soul into songs that were something else (i.e. "NIki Hoeky" and "Groovin'"). The most popular songs form this album are "A Natural Woman," "Chain Of Fools" and "Ain't No Way." The latter was written by Aretha's sister, Carolyn, and aretha puts as much soul into it as she does with the others. "Ain't No Way" has been redone by many other stars also but i think Aretha's is very pure and will never be duplicated because there is a link between her and Carolyn. A Family Affair.
The reissue includes the unedited version of "Chain Of Fools" which lets us see into the potential of the song if it were more bluesy. The part that was cut was the intro which is unlike the intro for "You Are My Sunshine" (from Aretha Arrives). This type of cal-and-response is one of the African-American gospel traditions. If you go into a African-American church you will hear this type of singing. I think that's what Aretha brought to the pop world was the stylings of gospel into pop songs. Thank you Aretha.
