| Ghosts |
| Many of the stories on this page have to deal with the ghosts of the "rez." Whether they are hitchhiking, haunting, or just having fun. Ghosts are a major part of Fort Peck reservation because many believe them to be relatives telling them what to do and many are just plain scared of them. Either way they're here and may not go away. Some people have learned to live with them and many have been running from them. I think it depends on what your frame of mind is. Scroll down to read some stories. THE GHOSTS' OF FAMILY MEMEBERS Many times people have seen the spirit of their dead relative. Usually this is right after the person has dies or on an anniversary of something the deceased has been through. When people see these spirits they usually think that the deceased is trying to tell them something or just saying goodbye. "Right after my uncle Eddie passed away I wasin the house where he killed himself. I was coming out of the bathroom and felt like someone was watching me. When I looked around I saw him peeking around the corner of the kitchen."-Pearl "In my boyfriend's house while I was sleeping I was dreaming about my grandmother Faye. I woke up crying and she was standing at the end of the bed and said to me 'Don't worry my girl, you'll be ok, I love you.' She touched my head and vanished."-Pearl My sister has also seen the spirit of my grandmother after she died. She said she had just gotten home from the hospital and had cried herself to sleep. She woke up a little while later and felt a great pressure being lifted off of her. She felt like everything was going to be alright. When she looked towards her kids she a dress. The kind my grandma always used to wear. She saw her lean down and touch the heads of my niece and nephew then she vanished. My sister fell alseep after that.-Larry F. "We were having a cook out on my husband's land. We had just put the kids to bed and were just sitting around talking. There was another couple that had not shown up so we decided to wait. Finally we heard footsteps behind us. My husband took his flashlight and looked around. We saw the couple walking towards us clinging to each other. We asked them what happened and they said their car had broken down so they started walking. While they were walking they started hearing footsteps behind them. They gotscared but just started walking a little faster. The footsteps also started walking faster and they were getting closer! The woman was getting really scared because they were right in back of her, if she would have turned slightly she would've saw something. The strange thing about those footsteps were they sounded like hooves! Finally the footsteps stopped and so the couple calmed down. As they neared the place were WE were they heard the footsteps again! Well by this time the woman was really scared and didn't look up. Her man saw and he told her to look, when she did what she saw astounded her. There standing in front of them was the most handsome warrior dressed in the traditional way and sitting upon a horse. He started motioning them to come, when they started towards him, he vanished.-Anita D. "If you walk on the road along the railroad tracks in Blair around midnight, you start to hear someone or something walking behind you. If you turn around and walk backwards it'll walk in front of you and if you run it'll run also. You can't see anyone or anything just the road. It makes chills go down your spine and your hair stand on end. There is a cold chill you feel coming all around you. There can be a full moon and you still won't see anyone or anything. If you keep walking then you start to hear someone whispering in your ear! They say that it is the ghosts of dead Japanese people, wandering this earth."-Kathy R.F. "I was going to sleep and my boyfriend was in the living room cleaning. I had woke up a couple of minutes later and saw someone standing in the hallway. I thought it was my boyfriend but i couldn't figure out why he was standing there. Then I realized that I couldn't move. My hands felt like they were being held down. I closed my eyes and started to pray, when I opened my eyes the figure was gone. I called my boyfriend and he came into the bedroom. He asked me if I had gone into the kids' room and I said no. I asked him why and he said that he had shut the door and now it was open! I told him what I saw and he got silent."-Tara |
