| Ever wondered why NRMP stats look so horrible and discouraging especially for IMGs?
Here few among many reasons. But the good thing about these is that they are on the contrary quite encouraging. It's a common practice though makes only a minority of applicants. A sizable number of IMGs sign pre-match/out of match... yet, majority of them remain in the match system. What they do is purposely rank only places they never applied to via ERAS to ensure that they go "unmatched." They figure since they already paid the NRMP fee and it was too much hassle to withdraw from match, so they just did what they could to make sure they didn't match since they already signed out of match... Like I said, this probably only account for a small percentage of those that go unmatched... but it's a known practice. I am also hearing more and more of IMGs who are signing up for the Match solely to receive stats, lists etc that you are entitled to when you're in the system. People go as far as to try to sell this info. Then there are many who sign up for the Match but then make mistakes like sending their apps out too late in the game; failed Steps especially CS; dont do their research (i.e. apply to places that dont take IMGs or have higher cut-off scores than the applicant has); Some realize too late that they wont meet deadlines in time to begin at a program (i.e. wont be ECFMG certified in time, or they cant complete electives by a certain time). How many IMGs sign out of match on average? Here is a calculated guess JAMA survey says: 23,962 total PGY1 spots in 2004 NRMP match says: 19,391 matched through NRMP in 2004. This means that 4,571 PGY1 spots were filled outside the NRMP match in 2004, including pre-matches, scramble, post-matches, etc.. For reference, the NRMP only lists 1,800 spots available for the scramble [21,192 totals PGY1 offered minus 19,392 NRMP PGY1 filled]. Assuming that all US Seniors get a spot (not entirely true, but good enough for calculation.) This means that 1,037 unmatched US Seniors successfully scrambled, post-matched, pre-matched (e.g. military). Let's subtract that from the 4,571 PGY1 spots filled outside the match: 3,534 spots still remain. Subtract ALL the US Seniors (including those who withdrew or had a null rank list) that's an additional 628 applicants (537 withdrew, 91 null rank). This means that after every single graduating US Senior is accounted for (approximately) Now 2,906 spots still remain for independent applicants. Its not sure (unlike the US Seniors for the most part), how many IMGs/FMGs actually were competitive applicants. (Because withdrew/no ranking numbers are uncertain.) However, it is not unimaginable that of those 2,906 spots, something on the order of 2,000 went to IMGs/FMGs. Fellowship/Residency Match head to head Unlike the residency Match, 75% of fellowship applicants do not get one of their top 3 choices. In 2003, statistics taken from the NRMP Fellowship Match site showed that overall, only 63% of applicants matched at all more to come......... |
