If you are serious about abolishing the practice of "Mandatory Overtime" in the United States workplace then, copy/print the following letter and snail mail it to: Secratary of Labor c/o U.S. Department of Labor Frances Perkins Building 200 Constitution Avenue, NW Washington, DC 20210 To the U.S.Secratary of Labor, No one should be forced to work involuntary mandatory overtime by being threatened with disciplinary action including potential termination. Currently there is no protection for employees from the U.S.Dept. of Labor / U.S. Government for employees that do not wish to work "mandatory overtime" hours (over the standard 40 hour work week). Thus many employees are overworked, overstressed. The U.S DOL needs to amend the outdated FLSA(Fair Labor Standards Act) of 1938 to include that Mandatory Overtime(Involuntary Overtime) is Illegal and Employers punishable by hefty fines. Already 7 states have created laws against Mandatory Overtime. It is about time the Federal Governement do something to protect it's Labor Force. This letter is part of a letter writing campaign to bring the U.S.DOL's attention to this matter, hopefully you will be recieveing many more just like this one. forced- 1.enforced or compulsory: forced labor. 2.strained, unnatural, or affected: a forced smile. involuntary-1.not voluntary; independent of one's will; not by one's own choice: an involuntary listener; involuntary servitude. mandatory- 1.authoritatively ordered; obligatory; compulsory: It is mandatory that all students take two years of math. 2.pertaining to, of the nature of, or containing a command. 3.Law. permitting no option; not to be disregarded or modified: a mandatory clause. By these definintions thousands of U.S. Workers are being forced to work extra hours and/or extra days against thier will by thier employers. The U.S. Governement & the U.S. Dept. of Labor needs to put a stop to the unfair practice of allowing employers to order employees to work extra hours & extra days that the employees would rather not work. I would like to point out the studies / reports at the links below on how detrimental Mandatory Overtime is to an Employees health and family happiness.
