MALL SPRAWL WILL CHOKE US ALL

Dear Neighbor:
The towns of Abington, Rockland and Weymouth voted a Reuse Plan for the South Weymouth Naval Air Station. The basic design consisting of a public golf course, senior housing, and open space is good. The Mills Corporation proposal for a mega-mall consisting of 200 outlet shops, 20 liquor licenses and a 30 screen entertainment facility in the retail/business area will be disastrous to all towns on the South Shore.
The Tri-Town Development Corporation members locked themselves into an agreement with the Mills Corporation early in the process which has prevented consideration of other options.
The mega-mall will bring an additional 40,000 to 60,000 vehicles trips per day on Route 3 and adjacent roadways affecting communities within a 50 mile radius. Each and every one of us will be affected. The Massachusetts Highway Department can not mitigate this amount of traffic by widening Routes 3 and 18.
Another major concern involves the water and sewer needs for 18 million visitors per year to this mega-mall. Which community will Jeopardize its valuable source of water for this project?
Seven thousand jobs are projected as a result of this mega-mall. The majority will be minimum wage and will not support homeowners in the surrounding towns. Will this affect our established businesses who currently have problems getting competent help?
Recent "Big Dig" overruns in the amount of 1.4 billion will require additional state tax dollars. How can our legislators justify spending 60 million tax payer dollars to build a road to a mall when our other highways and bridges are desperately in need of repair?
If any of these issues concern you, we need you to ACT NOW. The Reuse Plan can be put back on the right track but only if we work together. This is not a "done deal" but we need to move fast. If you can volunteer time, it will be greatly appreciated. Contributions in any amount will help stop the mall.
