Tonight the SSTTDC voted 4-1 to terminate the Purchase
and Sales agreement with Mills.

John Rogers of Rockland was the holdout.

The SSTTDC showed courage and determination as they presented the reasons for their votes. They talked about being unable to realistically reach the time milestones that had been previously discussed with Mills, and that they were now looking at the END of this decade rather than the beginning of the decade to have infrastructure in place. They told Mills that their latest offer came as "too little too late" (Lundquist) and they used phrases like "We need to focus on the realities of the situation" (Lavin) and "Things change and times change" (Lundquist) and "We need to do a reality check" (Killinger) and "We will be looking at significantly reduced retail, a different scenario completely (Goff) and that they would be using EOEA Secretary Durand's scoping document as their guide, not the Purchase and Sales agreement and that, "The P&S encumbers us. We need to proceed unencumbered" (Goff) and so on. Jim Wilson of Weymouth made the motion to terminate in that big, booming, theatrical voice of his.

This opens up a whole new world of possibility and brings renewed hope for the base.

What is COMPARE's next move? We will not dissolve, there is still work to do. We all need to keep an eye on the SSTTDC as they proceed with their plans. We need to watch out for a Mills rebound, which hopefully won't happen, but they certainly have been like a movie monster that keeps getting killed only to rise again and again and again, like that molten metal guy in "Terminator 2." The access road is still very much an issue; one of the Directors said tonight, "The access road is the key to our success." And we need to start talking about rethinking the 240 acres currently designated for retail in the reuse plan.

Watch the papers tomorrow for the news.
