Mass Highway told us to expect to see 12,000 extra cars & trucks per day on AV ERAGE on Rte 18 in Abington if we build a Mall. Never mind what the traffic count will be during the holiday shopping season! Rte 18 currently services about 22,000+/- vehicles today -- it can't handle much more.
The "solution" (if the Mall and Abington Connector Road are built) to handle all the extra traffic is to convert Rte 18 to a FOUR LANE highway all the way from Rte 3 to Trucchi's Supermarket in Abington. More cars, more trucks (gotta stock the mall's shelves and empty their dumpsters!), higher speeds, no crosswalks, and impossible access from our current side streets.
And the Mall proponents say this Mall will be no bigger than Braintree Plaza -- for how long? Are there any restrictions to forbid future expansion?? (I need to check) I understand the Base's zoning laws allow buildings to be erected up to 125 feet high -- Braintree expanded by building upward and adding additional floors; what happens if the MegaMall does the same? How many more stores, cars, dumpsters, trucks??
I'm not in favor of a Mall on the air base, and we don't need another Mall around here. Sure, Abington approved the Reuse plan at our Town Meeting (I voted for it), but at that time there was NO road connecting into Abington and there were NO traffic estimates available --which now show that of the 72,000 total cars to enter and exit the air base from all directions when it is 100% developed, 50,000 cars and trucks will drive in and out of the air base solely because of the presence of the Mall. Those numbers scare me. Delete the Mall and you delete 50,000 vehicles.
The people whom I've talked to share these same concerns, but it's as if people are afraid to speak out against the Mall.
