The Important human being

You think that your species by default makes you important? Think again...

A short text concerning the common misunderstanding that being human automatically makes you valuable.

The Human Being is separated from the rest of the animal kingdom by their affinity for morals. Right? One easily loses track of sivilication. Just watch CNN. Rape, murder, abuse. You could just as well have been watching Animal Planet. Apparently, we don't possess those precious Morals. We're not born with the ability to differ between right and wrong, and act according to the benefit of society and our neighbours.

Is there someone to blame? Maybe it's the internet, or TV, or the movies "childs play", "terminator", "pulp fiction"? Or maybe it's the work of a devil, or a witch or an evil spirit. Every society has its scapegoats. It wasn't me, it was my neighbour. Go get my neighbour, he's the one to blame!

The belief in a God gives mankind the important position in nature that it needs. It gives man the power of the dictator. The religious argument, I will not concider here, as I am not religious myself. Questions about belief should not be adressed logically, as they're not based on logic.

As is the case with all animals, the human being is being controlled by certain primal "needs" or "wants". I want! I need! Me, I, mine! Egoism is what causes criminality. Attention, fame, money, power... Every crime is caused by egoism, by the feeling of being more important than your victims, by that need. If a crime isn't committed, it is because the risk of being caught overshadows the benefit of the crime. The higher the punishment, the lower the crimerate. There's nothing special about the human being when it comes to those sacred morals. We just have the voice to make up excuses.

What about the concious mind. The main argument of human superiority is the conscious mind of the human being. Surely that makes us superior? Of course, this is a valuable character. The human intelligence is truly magnificent. We are most likely the smartest creatures on earth when it comes to cognitive intelligence and logic. Does it really matter though? Who is to decide which skill and talent is the better one? I strongly suspects that the speed of a cheetah is what the cheetah itself would concider the most valuable skill of all. Well, the cheetah doesn't have anything to say in this matter, it seems, because mankind has determined that intelligence is to be concidered the best, the superior character. That sort of makes sense, don't you think?

-The jury has decided that mankind is the most valuable creature on earth.
-Who's the jury?
-Mankind.

-What a surprise..

The problem in valuing an organism by a certain character is obvious. Let me give you an example. Intelligence is the most valuable character there is. Who is then to live; the intelligent philosopher or the less intelligent factoryworker? Who is to die? Who is to live: the scientist who study weapons technology or the scientist who study a possible cure for cancer? The "good guy" should live? Why? They're equally intelligent... And what about mental disorders? brain damage? Did you think about that, O Intelligent One?

How about success? The human race is successful, but the rat is even more successful. Not to mention certain procaryotes, mice or flies....We'll leave it at that, I think. Do the math!

It is obvious that a criminal can't be his own judge and jury. The importance of the human being could very well be proven false, based as it is on an egocentric point of view.

"We, the human race,
in the case of the human race versus nature,
find the human race NOT GUILTY."

The egoistic trait will ensure our freedom, and we can go unpunished through the world. And of course, soon we will no longer have any stores to rob, and the not-guilty verdict will appear very foolish indeed.

I'm egoistic, you're egoistic, we're all egoistic. That is why we value ourselves more than other human beings, and that is why we declare that the human being is the dictator of the world, a power given by a God or our own Intelligence. In the end, we are "programmed" to take special interest in our own pleasure and/or survival.

Thus, a human being is not better than other animals in any way. Does this blow your self-esteem? No? Then let me explain: I have a cat. He's furry and friendly, purrs a lot and generally is a quite likable fellow. The whole neighbourhood loves him. Cute, eh? We've already established that the title "human being" holds no particular value on its own. Any value attatched to an organism must thus come from the organism itself, and this value is of course best measured by an objective third party. Who measures your worth? The people surrounding you. Now, can you claim to be loved by everybody you know? Didn't think so.

Thus I can claim that my cat, loved as he is by the whole neighbourhood, is more important than those sorry people who have nothing better to do than surf the net and try to make friends with that little piece of technology that their sorry excuse for a computer happen to be....
