ourageous, strong and steady of temperament, the Bullmastiff is the perfect family guard and companion. He was originally called "The Gamekeeper's Night Dog", having been bred as a companion to the English gamekeepers in their search for poachers. Since poaching was a hanging offense, many gamekeepers lost their lives until Bullmastiffs started accompanying them on their rounds. These dogs were bred, not as killers, but as holding dogs. They would track down the poacher, jump him, and hold him as long as need be (hours or even days) until the gamekeeper could take him into custody. This holding instinct persists today so that a Bullmastiff in the home is a powerful guard and protector, but not a killer.
