Detrimentum Interview

Hi Jon, how are you and what are you doing right now?

Hi - I'm fine thanks, just trying to get this interview done while still at work!

Well, for the benefit of our avid readers could you please tell us short story how Detrimentum started and why the band choose this kind of name?

Well Eddie and I formed the band back in 1996. I'd come back from college having had no luck forming a band there, and I answered Eddie's advert in Terrorizer magazine. We got together immediately and started writing - the only thing we agreed on was that the music had to be really dark and heavy! Over about 4 years we struggled to keep a decent line-up together but then in 2001 Rushy joined (just to help us out at first) and Paul on guitar - we finally had a full-lineup! Since then we've achieved a hell of a lot! Playing shows with bands such as Vader, Vital Remains, Bolt Thrower, Zyklon, Cancer we've had some great live experiences. We have also put out an EP and have also recorded a full length album which is soon to be released! Back in the early days, we changed our name almost every week; it was something we could never agree on. For a long while we were called `Zarathustra' after the main character in a book by Friedrich Nietzsche, but seeing as we didn't write any lyrics about Nietzsche and there was also another band with the same name who had brought a full-length album out we decided to change it Detrimentum (after `Dominus Detrimentum' on our original CD demo).

I've read on your website at news section that you will be having a full length album to be release by Grindethic records. Could you please tell us more about this good news and how it was started to release on this label?

Once Grindethic have the funds together they will be releasing our full length album any time soon! It's been sitting around for a while, but we're all really happy that it is finally seeing the light of day! We spent several months last year trying to get a record deal, but didn't have any luck - recently Grindethic offered to help us out and we gladly accepted. It's great working with our friends again.

The latest album that it will be out soon is your "Embracing This Deformity". How many tracks could we expect on this album or/and still under processing for some additional tracks to be added?

The album contains 10 tracks in total and has been finished for a long time (at least a year). There are a few tweaks needed in terms of production but there will be no more tracks or additional parts added to the album. The band is already moving on and writing new material for another album!

What about the music what kind of music do we expect on this album? And the lyrics also What mostly topic do you tackle?

Personally, I think the music on the new album is a logical step forward from the EP - it has the same dark blend of fast and brutal death metal, black metal and epic doom parts, but the music is denser and more complex, with quite a claustrophic feel to it! I'm not the best authority on the lyrics, but our songs are mostly about the decline of humanity, depravity, dark and obscure songs about suffering, pain and death - all with Eddie's unique lyrical approach.

Your last gig attended was the "Festive Day of Death", right? Well, tell us more about this gig and how was your set? Is there any embarrassing moments you would like to share or unforgettable experience.

The Festive Day of Death wasn't a particularly great experience for us - it was to be Eddie's last ever gig with Detrimentum. Our set was cut short, and Eddie was clearly not enjoying himself on stage. Despite that we had one of the best live guitar sounds in our history as it was the first gig where Paul and I had both used our new equipment! One unforgettable moment - when Eddie and Rushy's other band (Infected Disarray) were playing, Wilson the bassist from Gorerotted came onstage naked and started jumping about! He has a tendency to do that after too many beers - I'm just glad we didn't go on last! I still have nightmares...

What about the upcoming show this coming April 27, 2007 at The Camden Underworld? What are the preparations of band doing right now for this gig? Are you familiar also with other bands that you will play with?

We are all really excited at the prospect of supporting Destroyer 666 on the 27th! We have a lot of rehearsals over the next 2 weekends and will practice our asses off, especially as we have a brand new line-up! We know Adorior pretty well, and have played with Necro Ritual before - it should be a great gig of black and death metal grimness!

The band was exist for almost 10 years already, is there any changes has been made to the band besides of lineup. Do you see also Detrimentum for another 10 years more or less, what do you think we could expect for the band in near future?

Apart from line-up changes, there haven't been any other dramatic changes. The band is still musically the same as far as I can see! We still blend death metal, black metal and elements of doom to create dark and brutal metal with a slightly epic, obscure feel. That has always been our aim and will not change. Paul and I have written 2 new songs for a new album already - and they fit the bill for Detrimentum very well. Musically the songs are slightly more refined than the current album, but it's still classic Detrimentum. I can see Detrimentum lasting another 10 years, at least I hope so, and I couldn't imagine life without the band! We still seem to be slowly gaining fans from around the world; it would be a waste to stop now!

Well, let's talk about the outside activities of the band. Besides of Detrimentum what else keep all you busy?

Well most of the current members are in full-time employment, apart from Phil (bass player) who is a student. Rushy is a trained chef, which is quite a frightening thought! Paul administers a web site for a large healthcare company and I fix computers for schools in Northampton shire - not very metal but it pays the bills! The band is our main activity outside of working hours, but we all like to party hard and go to gigs as well! I'm also trying to write a book in my spare time, but don't seem to have any extra time to do that at the moment! Luke (new vocalist) is also a band called SERMON OF HYPOCRISY, and Phil plays guitar and vocals in SATANIC ANGEL.

What local bands you would like to talk about and recommend to us? How's the death metal scene in your area? Is there any issue or current news right now?

There are some great underground bands from the UK. For fans of dark and grisly death metal I would recommend SARPANITUM, MITHRAS, THEOKTONY, DEAD BEYOND BURIED. Gore/grind fans should check out BEEF CONSPIRACY, INFECTED DISARRAY, FLESHROT and TWITCH OF THE DEATH NERVE. There are also loads of quality Black Metal bands in the UK - ADORIOR, ABGOTT and ANAAL NATHRAKH being just 3 that spring to mind. There are loads of other bands I have missed out here, but I haven't got the time to go through all of them!

Have you been tour already outside UK? Or do you have any plan working right now.

There are no concrete plans to tour as yet - I guess that's really up to the Grindethic budget! We are just playing this one off show with Destroyer 666 and Inquisition and will see how our news guys enjoy playing live with Detrimentum! If they really enjoy it (and I hope they do), we can then start to look at a proper tour. So far we have only played one show outside the UK - at the Obscene Extreme Festival in the Czech Republic back in 2004, we had an excellent time and would love to play more shows abroad.

What about touring in Southeast Asia or maybe Philippines is a dream?

Considering our budget it is pretty unlikely but you never know We'd love to blast our music at as many people in as many places as possible!

Well, last question. What do you know about Philippines? (Curious only)

That's a great question! I am ashamed to say I don't know much about the Philippines - I do know that it's a collection of islands in South East Asia, where the main language is Filipino but everyone speaks really good English! I'm also aware that the Spanish conquered The Philippines for a long time and fought off plenty of other European powers! I'm not really aware of the metal scene in the Philippines, apart from one or two magazines and a few band names (the only one that springs to mind now is PAGAN FIRE). Sorry! Please feel free to enlighten me; I'd love to know more about underground scenes around the world.

Thanks for your time Jon; I wish all the best for the band and to you.

Thank you for the great interview - I hope it was an interesting read! Thanks for your support Joselito and NoiseAttack!
