Bassless Interview

Interview by Joselito, Answered by Kalle, Fille & Simon, Done May 24, 2004 thru email & msn

1. Well, tell us more about BASSLESS, for the benefit of people who dont know yet what band is BASSLESS.
Were a crazy, brutal but very cute grind violence band from the west parts of Sweden. Three forths of the band are straight edge. We play grindcore but we have a hardcore attitude.

2. Ive heard that most of the band members are staright edge, tell us how the band start of being sxe and what is your view on sxe?
Simon and Fille got sxe at the age of 13, mainly influenced by swedish hc bands like Refused and Final Exit. Kalle has been living poison free his whole life but he didnt claim edge until he turned 17. We think its good for our health living clean. We try to be as openminded and tolerante as possible and we think people should do what they think is best for themselves as long as it doesnt invlove hurting others.

3. All of you are still going to school? Do you think being in a band is a time consuming for you? Besides for band what keep you all busy?
Yes, were all still in school. We dont see Bassless as time consuming or a waste of time cause its one of the funniest thinks we know. We love to hang out with the band and play at shows. Fille practises Aikido, we hang out with our friends, go to shows and mosh. Sometimes we play video games and read comic books (cheesy).

4. Most of the bassless members are came from SOUND OF RIOT band., Right? And this is a old school hardocre band. Well, why did you shift your music into grindcore? Is there anyone influenced the band to play like this?
Two of the members, Fille and Simon, are from SoR. Bassless started as a side prodject to SoR. But Bassless got more intresting than SoR and soon SoR broke up because of different views on their musical progress.
Fille got influenced by The Locust (USA-based power violence). Other influences: Fuck On The Beech, Jam Session, Youth of Today, Give Up The Ghost (ex American Nightmare), Napalm Death, Nasum and Converge.

5. SOUND OF RIOT and BASSLESS have different in style of music, but for you what band from the two do you really like most?
Bassless, but we had some memorable shows with SoR.

6. Is there is also some sxe grindcore band exist in sweden or only bassless is the one who exist. Is bassless also hangout with some sxe hardocre in your place, or tell us about your sxe scene if there is any?
No, we dont know about any other swedish sxe grindcore bands but if you find any please tell us. We know of Monster X from USA but we dont know if they play anymore.
We usually hang out with other sxe hc-kids at show in Gothenburg. You can say that the closest sxe scene is situated there.

7. What about the scene there in your place. What is your fave bands and fanzine exist now at your place you would like to talk.
Icos, Skitsystem, Rentokiller, Set My Path, The Change, Jam Session. (There are probably more but we cant come up with any right now).
We dont really know if there is any fanzines in the area where we live

8. Youve released already your bassless s/t demo and bassless Ja, just det. Could you pls. Tell more about this 2 records and what label released this.
Ja, just det contains both studio and live tracks. Basiclly its some primitive lo-fi crazyness. Bassless ahd a keyboard played by former member Tony (Kalle and Oscar hadnt come into the picture yet).
The s/t demo is recorded in a less primitive way. There is no keyboard and guitar on this record, just distorted bass. The songs is a bit more complex compared to the Ja, just det record. Both records are released on our own D.I.Y. label Tomatss Records (www.tomatsas.cjb.net).

9. Ive read already most of your lyrics and mostly its all about some personal thoughts. Can you give us some brief explanation of some of your lyrics, and what is the most important for the band. Lyrics or music?
To protect and sever The compulsory police violence song. Every punk/hardcore/grind-band must have one of those.
Your family album does not impress me Its not good to live in the past, dont get caught in nostalgia. Nostalgia is social necrofilia.
The lyrics is very important in this kind of music. You know, having a message. But the music is also very improtant cause it entertains.

10. Your new recorded songs are available now for download from your website and it said that it was recorded with a new guitarist. What is this a replacement of old guitarist or additional only. Why and what is the reason for having a new guitarist.
We had a guitarist but he quit the band so we wrote some new songs and the result of that was the s/t demo. After the demo we agreed on that we needed a guitarist to get a better sound or something (I dont really rembember any more). This guy at our school, Oscar, became our replacement guitarist. Now we have been rehearsing with him so he can learn all the songs.

11. What about your first gig. Do you remember when and where it is happened. And what is the audience reaction on the first time they see BASSLESS live?
At out school. The audience just sat there as questions signs and wondered what the hell three screaming idiots where doing on the stage. After the show the principle said: Im glad its over. A very successful show!

12. Have you been play already outside sweden? Or do you have any future plan coming for outside sweden? (Like in the Philippines)
No, we have never played outside Sweden but it would be great if we had the chance. And yes, we would love to play in the Philippines if we got some shows there and if we could afford the flight ticktes.

13. What about europe tour, have you done this already? Or if there is a chance what band do you want to play with?
As in the question above, no we havent played abroad. Bassless is a small band and there arent many who knows of us outside the west parts of Sweden.
Locust, Napalm Death, Converge, Give Up The Ghost. Any band really, except white power-shit.

14. What can you say about those other bands who used the scene (but not in grindcore scene only) to make money for their own. Like ie. bands who dont support diy small label because they knew that they cant make money in this kind of label if they will be invited in any project for a small diy label. Do you have any idea what band im talking about in sweden?
If they are only in it for the money and not for the love of the music then we dont think its so good. But we dont think its anything wrong with bands that are on a non-diy label if they are true to their music. For Bassless its never going to be a problem cause no one is going to sign us anyway.

15. Kalle, said that hes gonna join on May 1 labor day rally/demo, what happened on the world wide event and is it all of the band are active also in joining this kind of event?
Everyone except Oscar joined in the Labour Day demo. After the demo we went to a show arranged by the anarcho punk/hc collective SPATT. We just had fun and celebrated Labour Day.

16. Can you tell us any info about SPATT? Is there anyone of the band who is a member of this group?
I guess you better check this site for more info... (http://www.algonet.se/~j-falk/spatt/english/english.htm)
I got this membership card from SPATT so you can say that i'm a member, but i haven't figured out what it means being a member yet.

17. Why?
On the 1st of May show everyone who payed in the door got one membership card...

18. Maybe that's was only a entrance fee and the card they gave to you serve as a ticket? Hmm...
Maybe... someday i will understand ...

19. One last questions which is i always ask, so i hope you dont mind to answer this. Well, what do you know about the Philippines?
What do you know about Sweden? Just kidding. Were sorry to say that we dont know much about the Philippines. We are just a bounch of euro-centric dumbfucks who doesnt know anything about nothing.

20. Ok, thats for all. I hope you like interview. Its your turn to say more... bye!
Thanks for the interview. Keep up the D.I.Y spirit! Take care, peace out. xXx.
