Controversies Against South Park...what trouble do they get themselves into?...
Other than the fact that numerous shows (e.g. "Bloody Mary") became banned in countries such as Canada, the creators of South Park do find themselves a lot of complications and anguish regarding their controversial themes.

The most relevant and recent controversy is the leaving of Isaac Hayes (voice of Chef) who left due to a new episode Parker and Stone created entitled "Trapped in the Closet".  The entire episode was a satirical comment on the religion of Scientology.

This satire bothered Hayes to the extent of leaving the series.

A direct quote from the show "Trapped in the Closet", read:

"The old religions have failed you.  What have they offered except war, poverty, and sadness?  Scientology offers you the key to living your life to the fullest.  Will you join us?"

While Hayes felt compelled to leave the show saying: "There is a place in this world for satire, but there is a time when satire ends and intolerance and bigotry towards religious beliefs of others begins."

Obviously, there is much more to South Park than all the controversy...but this is the aspect that will gain the most attention.  In New Zealand, there was an appeal from the Catholic Church to ban the episode "Bloody Mary".  The episode did air, and it accumulated more than 6 times the regular amount of viewers (210,000 to be exact).  It is evident that controversy sells, and Stone and Parker know how to make it work.  Unfortunately, they were unable to make it work enough to keep Hayes on board, but, like everything in life, sacrifices are made.
