Most commercial artists enjoy the chance to design a poster.  Frequently, posters offer the chance to push the restrictions to do things that are not always appropriate for other forms of print media.  As you work on a layout for a poster, search for variations that bring one or another element center stage.  Look for ways of visually and conceptually supporting that element.  Experiment with designs that you wouldn’t normally do.  Design with a lot of heavy type, color, light and dark.

A successful poster is one that delivers its message directly and powerfully through:
  • visual impact
  • intriguing messages
  • interesting color

This example gives the viewers three
major elements: image text and heading.

One way to draw the viewer's eye
and attention to a poster is to give
plenty to look at.

Placement is everything when dealing
with white space.
