ABRAMELIN, (1995)

Rating: 7
Best Songs- Humble Abode
Worst Song-Invocation but it's still good
Better than most of the stuff their American peers have released

Written by Shaun Downton

An Australian Death Metal band hailing from Melbourne, originally under the name of Acheron. The line up features the death vocals of Simon Dower , the brutal yet melodic guitar work of Tim Alridge and the solid rhythm section of Justin Wornes and Euan Heriot, Drums and Bass respectively. This not exaclty quite the typical death metal album, although the manchokingonhisvomit vocals are throughout as to all brutal death metal acts. And of course the gory lyrical topics ranging from Pedophiles to Necrophiles to all sorts of pleasant things. But they also throw in a few surprises to keep things fresh. Like a ten minute epic about necrophilia split over two tracks called 'Stargazer'. At the end of the first part of that track we are treated to a really nice classical acoustic guitar peice for about a minute before the carnage sets back in. So that adds a nice breather to things. They also close the album with a calm trip out cover of Dead Can Dance's 'Cantara'.

But elsewhere expect awesome death metal riffery with the obligatory speedy double bass drum passages. Which can grow very tired quickly as it seems they were only made for bashing your head to at a live concert. The album starts off on a real strong point with 'Misfortune'. The next two keep the theme going until we get to 'Humble Abode' which is interestingly unpredictable in its structure in a death metal way of course. With an awesome memorable intro riff that is probably one of the greatest the genre has ever created. But the album really starts to drag a bit in the second half. Being a bit too generic and unexciting. But this can't really take away from all the highpoints. Overall this is a band that doesn't get the recognition it deserves when Cannibal Corpse and lesser talented bands are serving the same song year after year. If you like the genre check this out. But they really shined on their 2000 release 'Deadspeak'. The Greatest Death Metal Album ever in my opinion. But this is still decent.
