I have been a musician all of my life. It is only in these past ten years that I have gotten to unleash what’s inside of me. I started playing the saxophone in the fourth grade. I learned to sing in junior high and picked up bass about halfway through high school. It wasn’t until my senior year in high school that I really learned what made music work though. After I learned how music theory worked, there’s been no stopping me. So often in life we are limited to less than perfect expression because we lack the means to translate what’s inside of us. I believe music is the perfect medium, and I’m so lucky to have learned how to speak that language. My life has been filled with performances of almost every other kind as well. From nine great musicals and plays with the Mt. Ararat Stage Company to summer theater at Pilgrim Lodge, from four fantastic years of Interactive Theater with the group "F.A.T.E." to my current status as a member of the IC Players, it has all been wonderful. Since I’m an English Ed. major this should be of no surprise to anyone out there, but I’ll still share with you one of the things I get the most enjoyment from. I love literature. I love everything from the classics to the most recent works. The writings of the Beat Generation and the writings which developed from it are my absolute favorite. Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, William Burroughs, Richard Brautigan, Thom Gunn, David Cassidy, ee cummings, etc. A great deal of my lyrical influence in songwriting can be traced to the poetry of these men and the many others who I didn’t mention. I would like to say that I have enjoyed thoroughly working with my four band mates to bring South Hill out of the hypothetical world it lived in for so long. There is no process which is so rewarding or which feels so good as to be making music with good friends. The total peace that comes from the complete respect and ego-free give-and-take that is music is something which I hope shines through in our music. I would like to thank God for having blessed me with all that he has. My parents, for having been the most wonderful two people on the planet that I’ve ever met and for never stopping supporting me or helping me to reach my goals. My sister for teaching me some valuable lessons in patience and for helping my parents to prove to me forever that you never miss something until it’s gone. My entire family for helping me be who I am, reminding me it’s healthy to laugh at oneself from time to time, and for instilling in me that "We may not make a lot of money, but we eat well and have a good time." MT, AN, SD, SM, (EW, KR, EA The Star Wars Conference), MH, JG, CW, HL, KB, MD, SB, SB, KT, DH, CD, Bud, AS, JL, EF, RH, JB (wherever you may be...), SB (you’re always with me in spirit), JH, and everyone else I’ve ever known. If I missed anyone, you know who you are, and believe me I still love you all. And finally my friends, I hope to see you all at a South Hill show sometime in the future. "It’s not music FACT, it’s music THEORY, so there isn’t anything you CAN’T do with it!" - Eddie Van Halen "Poetry is the process of recreating your own ignorance. You’re just looking for the next word." - Derek Walcott "Let’s dance." Robert Fulgham I can only tell you what God would tell you. Dry your tears. Dry up your sins. Me?
