My father and I have always shared a love for music. My father had been asking me for years to pick up a guitar. I loved music, but I really did not have a real desire to start playing the guitar. One summer at the camp that I go to, a lot of my friends brought up their guitars. I saw my friends playing guitar and I really enjoyed watching them. One of my friends told me that I should learn how to play guitar. He knew of my love for music and my love of poetry writing. It only made sense to combine the two by picking up the guitar. That summer I tried to collaborate with a friend, with him writing the music and me the lyrics. Nothing came out of that collaboration, but some lyrics for that song went into my first song along with some new lyrics. My goal as a songwriter is to touch other people. Not in a physical way, but in an emotional way. To have someone come up to me and say "That song means so much to me" as one of the best compliments I can get. One time, after playing a song (Blue eyes), two people began to cry. That meant more to me than any words that could be said. I saw that I had touched those two people through one of my songs. I want to have my songs make a difference in other people's lives. I want someone to say that they know what those lyrics mean and that they have meaning to their own life. They can reflect on a moment in their life from one of my songs. A song can reflect a moment in time. It is kind of like every time I hear the song "Lady picture Show" by the Stone Temple Pilots, I think of a day my brother and I spent together. The song has nothing to do with the day, but it causes me to think of my brother when I hear it. A little side note, that was the best day my brother and I have ever spent together in our lives. My main goal as part of this band is to create music. The creativity of this band lies in everyone's hands. I want to walk away from this band with some kind of recording that I can honestly say I helped create. To create a song that is good enough to play should be played and made available to others. Within the last year I have started to listen to the Stone Roses, The Smiths, Paul Weller, and Cornershop. Everyone has their favorite band an anyone who knows me know that my band is Oasis. I started to get into Oasis that same summer that I got into the desire to pick up guitar. I think that played a big role in my love for the band. I love American music too, but my heart lies across the sea. I listen to too many bands to list. To understand my background in music is hard to explain, but the main area I listen to is Rock, especially guitar rock. |
