Nakago suffered a horrible past which made him what he is now. His tribe, the Hin tribe, was hated by the people of Kutou, and when he was about eleven years old, his mother was raped by soldiers from Kutou. Nakago's character glowed brightly on his forehead and he accidentally killed his mother, along with the soldiers. He was brought to the palace where the emperor of Kutou abused him. Nakago may seem like a cold, ruthless person but he seems to have a soft spot sometimes.
Nakago searched for Yui when she first returned to the book and he got hurt by Li, a Shinigami warrior, for his trouble. A short time later, Maosi attacked him and he was severely outmatched. This attack put everything into perspective for him. Enough so, that he realized that to be able to stand a chance against the Shinigami, the Susaku and the Seiryuu would have to team up. As much as he hated the idea, Nakago accepted it as the only way to win against Maosi (he REALLY hates her).
