It’s not every day a young ska-punk band from Lancashire appear and excite people with their own style of ska and fast, energetic songs. From first getting together and practising in the summer of 2002, we’ve come on in leaps and bounds rattling out song after song from the powerful and heart tending “Apathy on the Table” to the fiery “Blue Room” and as the song goes “it’s the blue room, its what we do, it keeps us real and it keeps us true” truer words could not be spoken.

The journey began when Sean (Kenny) from Garstang, the lowest slung guitarist ever to strum a guitar and Dave whose voice gives No Concept both an original and unique sound had the idea of starting a band. Been mates for ages, the idea was put to the back of our minds as we went through high school and it was until we bumped into Kenny’s old school mate, a drunken Marr one late night that the topic arose again sparking an urge to form the band. Marr with his expert bass playing told Dave and Kenny that his band had split up and he was looking for a new direction and as we had interests in ska and punk it was decided No Concept was to become a reality. All three began writing songs which was followed by the introduction of young prodigy Matt, local skater, hip hop fan and not too bad on the drums. All that was lacking from the ska punk band was some brass…enter Huw, Kenny’s college friend who was told he played the trumpet like a dream. With over seven years of experience of playing the trumpet and an urge to sing he was a great asset to the band. Since the moment we all met at Lancaster Music Co-op not one of us has looked back. Quite the opposite can be said as we’re now preparing for gigs around the North West in Manchester and Preston amongst other places.

The first practice brought the idea for our first song “Big Mistake” composed by both Marr and Kenny and written by Huw the song was to be a favourite amongst followers and us. “The first song we did will always be special to us all simply because it was our first song” recalls Matt. “I wrote the song about a girl who I’d known for a bit and I’d thought to myself that it was a big mistake in fancying her” Huw went on to tell us, a theme which can be seen throughout the first album (“We don’t know…who you are”) in songs like “Game Over”, written by Dave and “Thinking’s Overated” a fast and edgy song, written by Kenny. After months of practice and dedication came a break through. A gig Leicester on the 9th November was to be our first port of call and it went off like a bang. Dave fronted No Concept oozing with confidence as he stepped on stage to perform his own song “The Blue Room” amongst the rest of the set. With Huw adding his own songs like the typical high school anthem “Over You”, Marr producing the highlight of the ska alldayer with his “bad babysitter” piece and Kenny continuing his comedy antics with the hilarious version of “Come as you are” by Nirvana. We’ve now being asked to go back early February of 2003 to play again. The word must be getting around.

Due to play with bands like “The Doofs”, “Everyday Life” and “Popstar Heroes” in the near future, the road ahead for the band is long and winding as some musician once said but what can be said is that No Concept are slowly putting themselves firmly on the map....recently (january 2003) we have appointed another trupet player called stokes who wil help boost the brass sound. We’re all having a cool time playing with the band, not only has it being a laugh but we’re making some half decent music too. And long may it continue.

Cheers,

No Concept

One day Kenny (sketchy guitrarist with the lowest slung guitar in the whole of Garstang + vocals) + Dave (vocals + jumping on + off stuff) who have been "mates" for ages had the idea to start a band in the back of their minds, but being lazy, they did'nt do anything about it till one night they met a drunken Marr (expert bass player), one of Kennys old shool mates, Marr told Kenny + Dave that his band has split up, and he wanted a new direction, as we were all into punk and ska music, we decided that we would start a ska punk band.  The next day, Kenny rung a hung-over Marr and they met and began writing  songs with Dave. Matt (drummer boy, local skater, hip-hop fan) was asked to play for us, he said yes.... Next we needed some brass, enter Huw (trumpet, vocals + changing his t-shirt a million times each practise) Kenny's college friend, Huw one day told Kenny that he played the trumpet like a dream . We organised a full pracitse and after alot more practises we had alot of songs + stuff, then we got another trumpet player called 'sexy stokes' who plays a brass coloured trumpet, as apose to huws silver one, and huw is dead jealous of this. bla bla blb bla bla. the end, boring really.
