Why do we hold stuff back? Why do we not look to anyone but ourselves for help? There's plenty of people out there waiting in the wings to offer a hand, right? Family. Friends. God. Why is it so hard for us to let our pride fall? Even in the beginning, God created a woman to help man (Genesis 2:18). What does God know that we don't? Easy, we're helpless. We need others to accomplish things. Even Christ talked to God when He was "at the end of His rope". He asked His Father to take this job, this task, away. God looked down at His Son, and Jesus said, "Oh yeah, it's your plan." Even with that God strengthened Him (Luke 22:43). Christ, the Messiah, did not do it on His own. So why do we think we can?
Also, I can't get past the fact, we don't think things will get better. I can understand how it can be misinterpreted. So often we use it as a way to make our friends and family feel better about themselves. But what about when it's sincere - because I believe it to be sincere. I know things will get better. For the most part it's going to take a great while, but it will be better. I mean we started out in this life with nothing. We could barely distinguish our mothers from complete strangers. We entered with no clothes. We may have had faith in our parents, but we now realize they aren't as powerful as we had once thought. We may have had a small glimpse of this "guy" in heaven who made everything. But did we fully understand? And now look at us. We look up at the sky and feel our heartbeat rise. As children we saw God's fingernail; now we see the moon and think of the Creator of the universe. There's been a lot of things in our lives that have truly bit the dust and possibly "allowed" for us to turn, but that doesn't mean things won't get better.
Take a look at the life of Christ. He came and drop kicked a ministry into the faces of all around Him. He then tells His disciples that He's going to be leaving them (John 16:5-7). Now He says it's to their advantage that He goes. They don't see the good thing about this. But, as He says, if he doesn't go, the "Helper" won't come. And once again he reiterates that we need help. Things don't stay bad forever. If they did, where would our hope be? Why seek God? I leave with this in mind:
Faith is trusting in something you can't place your finger on.
Hope is placing your faith with something you can't place your finger on.
God is something you can't place your finger on.
