Mai Kuraki

I remember how I got my first Mai Kuraki album. I had gone to the CD shop Ishimaru back in Thailand because they called to tell me that my copy of Siam Shade VI had arrived. When I got there, they told me it wasn't there yet. It was the 3rd time they had done that to me. Feeling disappointed, I glanced at the shelves and picked up an album. Mai Kuraki's "Delicious Way." I had heard one of her songs before so I decided, "what the hell, I'm not going back empty handed for the 3rd time." So I bought it and to this day am VERY glad that I did (it ended up being better than Siam Shade VI anyway).

Although she is classified as an R&B artist, like Hikaru Utada, I don't think her songs are really R&B. Kuraki has been compared to Utada on many occassions and even called a "copy" of Utada at various times. I disagree very much with that. Although she isn't as talented as Utada is, and she tends to follow the latest music trends in Japan, she does have her own unique sound. She has a nice, sweet voice that fits in well with her songs. I like her songs very much, and wow, she is cute (although that has nothing to do with her music, heheh).

Update: Sept 5, 2005

I'm really kind of disappointed with the way that Mai went with her songs and singing style. She had some good stuff before but her latest releases have been down right boring. She seems to really like singing the bland slow piano nice song and I just think that she doesn't have the good melody or right singing style to make it work. In an attempt to become a "better'" singer she really strains her voice and tries to put weight into each word but it just doesn't work for me. She has a naturally weak voice, so when she tries to do the power songs it just doesn't work. I liked it much better when she sang in her own range and knew what notes she could hit and still sound good. I guess my prime example for this would be her singing in "Not That Kind A Girl." That song really just bugs the hell out of me. If you listen to "Secret of My Heart" then you'll see how nice she sang before she tried to change her voice too much. Oh well...at least she's still really cute :-D
