Do As Infinity
Ok, ok, I admit it again. I hated Do As Infinity when I first heard them too. Even before I heard their music I hated them. I mean, what kind of group has a dumb name like "Do As Infinity" anyway? I had assumed (ass of out of u and me, or just me) that they were like Every Little Thing or even Favorite Blue, singing happy pop songs, with a girl singer, a guitarist and maybe even a keyboardist. Boy was I wrong. The first song I heard from them was "We Are." At the time, I was convinced I didn't like it, but now that I think about it, I was just tricking myself. My brother bought the tape of the album, "New World" and after a listen, we were convinced that not only had we been severely wrong about their music style, but we had been over looking a great band for a long time. So we went out and got the rest of their stuff and became Do As Infinity fans for life.
Although Do As Infinity is technically THREE people, Vocals - Tomiko Van, Guitar - Ryo Owatari, and Composer - Dai Nagao, only two of them (Van and Ryo) actually make any appearances in their music videos/cd booklets/lives anymore. Apparently Dai (whose name makes up "D"o "A"s "I"nfinity so they say) decided to work behind the scenes and let the other two take care of the "promotional" aspects of the band. Which is fine by me, since I always considered Do As Infinity to be just one person (Van) anyway, heheh. Anyway they sing a type of pop/rock style and do it better than anyone else out there. Van has a very distinct voice and I love it a lot. Definitely one of the better pop groups in Japan.
Update: Sept 5, 2005
Mrm, well maybe I spoke too soon (like 2 years) about DAI lol. Lately they've been totally copying themselves and have turned into ultra hacks...which is a shame cuz they really were a good group before. Their last album, Need Your Love, was incredibly forgettable, with no real notable songs. They seemed to have slipped into the formula of releasing a fast punk song, some slow song with that certain guitar rift instrument (ala Wings 510), and then another song (maybe the slow one) where Van uses wayyy too much falsetto. Oh well, I suppose they were good for a few albums. I don't expect anything good from them nowadays :-S
Some misc trivia: Break of DawN -> New WorlD -> Deep ForesT -> True SonG -> Gates of HeaveN -> Need Your Love
Update: Oct 2, 2005
I guess they disbanded like a week or two after I updated, :-S oops. Oh well. Like I said, they were getting stale anyway; it's probably better this way. Too bad their last album wasn't good and their last single (Tao) was blah.
