Price Posting Standards

The following are (proposed) price-posting standards that we should follow on the site. (If you have suggestions, email me)

Station Names

  For branded stations that have a single brand name, obviously, the name brand is used. Example: Wawa

  For 7-Eleven stations, please use the “7-Eleven” listing, not the brand of gas they sell.  It is much more helpful doing this.

  For stations that have multiple names, such as BP/Miller Mart or Shell/Miller Mart or Citgo/Rennie’s Gas, the brand of gasoline is the one used, not the convenience store. DO NOT list the station twice, once as a gasoline brand and once as a convenience store brand. This is an unnecessary duplicate!  (Please see the above rule for what to do for 7-Eleven stations!)

  For stations that have no identifying brand name in the drop-down list, the name of the establishment is acceptable, but if more than one member is posting the same station, an agreement should be reached to avoid duplicates.  If you wish to come to an agreement on a certain station, make a new topic in the Virginia Beach Discussion Forum, NOT the General or Suggest an improvement Forums!

  For stations that have a convenience store name, but no advertised gasoline brand (such as Miller Marts that are not Exxon, Shell, or BP branded, or Dodge’s Chicken), the name of the convenience store chain is used.

  Posts of (for example) Citgo branded 7-Elevens that are posted as 'Citgo' when also posted as '7-Eleven' by someone else, the Citgo’s post will be removed. Other examples include “Raceway” and RaceWay, the “Raceway’s” will be removed)

  If a station is on a military base, please use the name of the military base in the Area box.  (I will try to get all the military bases that have gas added.  Email me to tell me which ones, other than Fort Eustis and Langely AFB, have gas.)

   If we follow these simple guidelines, then we can cut out duplicate listings.

 Station Location

  Use intersecting street names in the address field. Show major street first, "&" minor street second.  Example:  Virginia Beach Blvd & Newtown Rd or Jefferson Ave & Oyster Point Rd.

  If a street name has a direction in it, such as “N”, “S” “E” or “W”, please post it in the station name appropriately.

  We would like to have a consistent listing among those members that post prices for any individual station.

Standard Posting

The following information is intended to serve as a guide for members who intend on posting prices to the local board on a regular basis. In an effort to minimize possible duplication of price posts (a station being listed multiple times), some type of agreement must be reached between us, the local membership, toward such a goal.

A handy tool on the site is the Favorites list.  If you choose to use the favorites list to post prices, please make sure it conforms to these standards, so that we can cut down on duplicates.  The Favorites list will automatically update prices in the listings IF the entry in your favorites list is exactly the same as the one in the orice list.  One character off and it ends up being a duplicate!  Be Careful!

STATION:

The name of the station should be obtained by using the dropdown window in the left column. If the brand of the station you wish to post is not listed, use the "other station" column to the immediate right. Be sure to capitalize the first (and only the first) letter of each word. If there are a few or more of this brand of station, we can suggest to the administrators that it be added to the dropdown list.

IMPORTANT: Prefixes such as "Joe's" or "Nellie's" etc, in addition to the fuel brand are not only unnecessary, but not appreciated, and the administrator will be asked to either delete or modify these entries. PLEASE USE BRAND NAMES ONLY. Note: If the station is unbranded, it is acceptable to use "Unbranded" or the proprietor's name ONLY in such instance.

AREA:

This can be tricky sometimes. The Virginia Beach metro area can be confusing, and municipal boundaries are sometimes vague. If you post a station and another member overwrites this information with other data because you have used an incorrect "area", it is only in an attempt to be as precise as possible. Please modify your post to display station "area" information as accurately as possible.  To help you, I have created maps as an attempt to outline the areas.  Some areas have close-up views to help illustrate the boundaries better.

OTHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

If you post prices and another member comes along and "cleans up" your post by proper spacing of words, eliminating unnecessary punctuation, adding or correcting intersection information, etc—anything which assists others to clarify station info, either learn how to post the station the way the "clean-up" member does it, or deal with the fact that your posts are being overwritten. Those are the options.

Be advised that as complete as possible information about a station's location is important to the senior membership of the Virginia Beach site. If we decide to edit posts, it is strictly in the interest of correct information. Trust me, we could care less who posts the information, JUST SO IT IS ACCURATE! If you find your posts are being edited, please take note of what is being done and change your post accordingly. Otherwise, get used to having your information overwritten.

I am also in the process of creating lists of stations in the area.  Once the users on the Virginia Beach site approve the list, we would like to use that as our standard format for posting the stations.
