In the jewelry industry the quantity of gold must be at least 1/20th by weight of the total product. Under FTC (Federal Trade Commission) regulations, a product may be marked as 14Kt Gold-Filled. Karat measurement of the gold content MUST be part of the marking or designation.
The finished product thus has a surface layer of gold of the appropriate karatage, which is very thick compared to rolled gold plate or the heaviest electroplate ( = gold plated) material.
Gold-Filled items are generally considered life-time products, and the gold layer will not quickly wear off, as it will in electroplated products. We do very rarely find an individual who cannot wear this material.
I have worn Gold filled rings, earrings and pendants for years and they have yet to show any signs of wear. Gold-filled has an actual layer of 14k Gold, (similar to dipping a candle ) as opposed to gold plating a microscopic film gold (similar to a thin layer of spray paint )
14 karat gold-filled is made by heat- and pressure-bonding a  layer of gold to a brass core. The 1/20 notation refers to the ratio of the 14 karat gold layer to the brass layer by weight, which is 5%. Karat gold covering the brass surface, making it tarnish resistant.
All of the gold-filled products offered meet federal standards for quality and content.
