Course Description:

We will learn the basics of creating a web page with HTML (Hypertext Markup Language).  Although software is available that makes web pages, it is important to understand the fundamental programming language (HTML) that is used on the internet.  This is an introduction to a simple programming language used for web page development for Internet and intranet. Lessons include text manipulation, graphics, hyper-text links, lists, and tables. Prerequisite: CS 110G or consent of instructor.

Words of Wisdom:

When you take a course about computers, you get out of it what you put into it.  Computers are constantly changing and you must be constantly learning to keep on the cutting edge.  A class in computers will help you get started, but it is up to you to go that extra mile to become an expert.   Working with computers is like learning a musical instrument.  You don’t become a good musician without practice.  It is the same with computers.  If you don’t practice and develop your skills on your own, then you’ll never be a true techie.  No computer class can teach you everything you need to know on a topic.  Computer courses are a jumping off point to a journey, not a destination.

Important Notes to Students (the fine print):

If you have, or believe you have, a disability that interferes with your performance as a student in this class, you are encouraged for academic reasons to discuss this on a confidential basis with your instructor and/or The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Coordinator in the Main Office or by calling 287-7981.   If you have a condition that may affect your ability to exit from the premises in case of an emergency, you are urged, for safety reasons, to notify the ADA coordinator.

Any student found guilty of academic misconduct shall be subject to disciplinary action.  Academic misconduct includes, but is not limited to, the following actions: cheating; plagiarism; unauthorized possession of examinations, reserve library materials or laboratory materials; unauthorized changing of grades on an examination, instructor’s grade book or grade report; nondisclosure or misrepresentation in filing out applications or other college records; or violation of computer use policies.   The following disciplinary actions and sanctions may be imposed for any of the above infractions of regulations: disciplinary probation, disciplinary suspension, dismissal, expulsion.

Netiquette
Read the following website about netiquette...
http://www.albion.com/netiquette/introduction.html

I would like everyone to make one good rule to follow when doing postings and responses.  Everyone needs to make a different rule.  Be sure to read everyone's postings before you post yours so we don't have any repeats.

March 16, 2004

Netiquette Quiz

Take the 10 question Netiquette Quiz at
http://www.albion.com/netiquette/netiquiz.html

Post how you did and what you learned.

March 17, 2004

Net Hunt Instructions

Read pages 8-13 in the book.  You'll see examples on the following types of pages (personal, hobby, e-zine, corporation, government, professional). Use the internet to find similar examples of each (do not use the examples they give in the book).

Post the addresses for these pages on WebCT. Do not use web pages that other students have used. No repeats!  So the sooner you post the better.

After you have posted, go to the next assignment in A4 (Ratings).  You will then rate the pages other students have found as to their quality using the chart provided on WebCT.

Your First Web Page
Our goal for this class is to create a working website. Your website will have several web pages as a part of it.  One web page I would like everyone to have is a biography page.  The biography page is basically an introduction of yourself.

I have two different biography web pages on the
internet.  Take a look at them and see what kind of
information you might want.  One of my biography pages is oriented to teaching...

http://grants.nmsu.edu/gr_webcourses/CS110/meetdoug.html

(You can also see the attached example)

The other page is oriented to my hobby of writing...
http://www.geocities.com/pocolocoplayers/bio.html

I have two tasks for you now.

1) Take a look at my two bio pages and decide which you like better and why.

2) Create the first part of your own bio page.  You can use the example in the assignments area or online at
http://grants.nmsu.edu/gr_webcourses/CS110/hndt9b.html

Or you can build your own with the "bare bones" on page 27 in your book... Your basic page should include html, title, and body.  Attach this page in the WebCT Discussion area.

If you need help, please call or email me or see our
class tutor.

Ethical Issues #1

Censorship Discussion

Should postings be censored in a newsgroup or bulletin board?  As an instructor, should I ever censor?

What is Okay
I would like everyone to express your opinion.  There are no right or wrong answers in the WebCT Discussion area, just tell me what you think.

What kind of web pages are okay for us to create in this class?  What kind of web pages should we not create?

There are many websites on the internet, that concern parents, teachers, and community members.  Should websites ever be banned?  If so, what kind and who should decide?

March 30, 2004

Cool Web Pages

I would like everyone to find one really good website and post it in the WebCT Discussion area.  No repeats so be sure to see what other students have posted.  Try to find a website that might be a good model for your own website.

March 30, 2004

Planning

Take a moment to consider what kind of website you might make.  The next few chapters, I'll ask you this questions again, so you can change your mind.  But right now, what kind of website would you like to make?  One for a business, one for your family, one for a hobby or special interest?

March 31, 2004

Read chapter 3.  Then take the new tags and add them to your biography web page.  Use the following: headings, align paragraphs, horizontal line, font size, font face, colors in text and links.

Post your updated web page in the WebCT Discussion area as an attachment.

April 1, 2004

Ethical Issue #2

What are popup ads?  What is spam?  How do you feel
about popup ads and spam?

Pretend you are starting a business with your website. Many people do not like popup ads and spam.  Would you use these methods to get people to visit your website? Is there any other way to get people to come to your website?

April 1, 2004

More Cool Web Pages

Find another outstanding website and post the address in the WebCT Discussion area for us to see.  Be sure to read what other students have posted so we don't have any repeats.

April 6, 2004

More Planning

I would like you to create a map for your website.  What are the different pages you will be creating that will make up your website?

For Project 1, you will create three pages to your
website.  One can be your biography page, but what will the other two be about.

For example, if you are making a website about your
family, one page can be about you, one page can be about your mother's side of the family and the other page can be about your father's side of the family.

For Project 2, you will be creating three more pages
(six total) for your final website.   What are six pages that you will create.

Back to our family website example.  You can create
three more pages on your children, your spouse's family, your family pets, family vacations, or even a family tree.  It's up to you.

So... please post your thoughts on six pages you think you'll create.  You can change this later, but write a rough idea now.

Chapter 4 – On Your Own

From this point on, I encourage you to start working on your own.  The focus is on creating a good web page that you can use.   But never fear, I am available to help.  Please email me or post questions in this discussion area.  I am available in room 124 on Tuesday and Thursday from 4pm-6:15pm.

Here is the assignment: Read chapter 4.  Then take the new tags and add them to your biography web page or to a new page in your website you are planning.

Add the following to your page: an ordered list,
bulleted list, definition list, and lists inside list.

Post your updated web page in the WebCT Discussion area as an attachment.

April 8, 2004

Chapter 5 – Hyperlinks

Read chapter 5.  Then take the new tags below and add them to your biography web page or to a new page you are planning for your website.

Add the following to your page: create hyperlinks to 5 of your favorite websites, create an email hyperlink to your email.

If you have trouble, let me know and I'll email you an example.

Post your updated web page in the WebCT Discussion area as an attachment.

Chapter 7 – Post Your Web Page on Geocities

(Chapter 6 Images is a challenging lesson so it has been moved)

I would like everyone to now post your web pages you
have created on Geocities:

http://www.geocities.com

Geocities is a free web hosting service through
Yahoo.com.  It won't cost you anything and if you have a Yahoo email account it is very easy to set up.

We will upload your web site files to the internet so you have a working web page for all the world to see.

1. Open Internet Explorer (or another web browser).

2. Go to the web address:  http://www.geocities.com

3. You now see the Geocities welcome page.  On the left hand side, click on the blue hyperlink that says free.

4. Click Sign Up on the right hand side by the GeoCities Free area.

5. If you are new to Yahoo, you will need to fill out the form that is displayed.  The Yahoo! ID you select will be the name of your website so select it carefully.  Do not hit enter until you fill out the entire form. Use tab to move from field to field. (if you have a Yahoo email account, click on sign in)

6. Once you have created an account or if you are an
existing Yahoo users, you will be asked to select a
category for your website.  Pick a category and then hit enter.  You will now upload your web page files to the internet.  You will need to upload all your HTML files AND pictures.  Click on Easy Upload on the right (Advanced Toolbox) to upload your files.

7. Click on the Browse button on the right to upload
your first file.

8.  The Choose File box appears.  Click on the black
list arrow to the right of the Look in field.  Chose the drive where your files are located.  When you find the first file, select it and click OPEN.

9. You should see the file appear in the first field. Click on the next Browse button and repeat the process until all the fields are used.  Then click the button Upload Files.

10. You should see a list of the files under Upload
results.  You want to see the message “Uploaded
successfully.”

11. If you have more files, continue to upload files by clicking the blue hyperlink Upload More Files.

12. When you are done uploading files, click on the blue hyperlink that says File Manager.

13. You will see a list of your files appear.  HTML
files appear with little yellow pencils in front of
them.  If you click the yellow pencil you can edit your HTML file.

14. To make your web site work to its potential, we will now rename your first page.  You first page you want people to see should be named index.html.  Find the file you want people to see first.  It will either be a welcome page or if you are using frames, your frames page.

15. First place a check in front of the current index file (unless it is yours) and click the Delete button at the top of the page.

16. Place a check in front of your main page, then click the Rename button at the top of the page.  Type “index.html” under the new name field. Then click the Rename Files button.

17. Check to see if your web site is working by clicking the blue hyperlink at the top left after “Your site:”.  This hyperlink is your website address that anyone can access from around the world.  You can also click on “View” to check each page.  If you find any problems, you can edit the HTML by clicking the yellow pencil.  If you make changes to your files in Notepad, you will have
to upload the files again after you make the changes.

If you have any problems, please contact me for help.

If you find any mistakes in my directions, please post it here and I'll give you extra credit.

Exam 1

For your first exam, you will look at the web pages I created and try to find all the mistakes.  You will E-MAIL me the corrected web pages (doug1 and doug2).  Sorry, I had to shout, but it is very important that you E-MAIL this.  Do NOT post the corrected web pages on WebCT.
