Earth Science Lesson Plan

Objectives

The student will create a set of rocks that share at least two characteristics.

Connections

National Standard

  • ESS1- Students will develop and understanding of properties of earth materials.

State Standard

  • KERA 2.1- Students will understand scientific ways of thinking and working and use those methods to solve real-life problems. b\fs24
  • KERA 2.2- Students will identify, analyze, and use patterns such as cycles and trends to understand past and present events and to predict possible future events.
  • KCCT SC E 2.1.1- Earth materials include rocks and soils, water, the gases of the atmosphere. Minerals that make up rocks have properties of color, texture, and hardness. Soils have properties of color , texture and hardness. Soils have properties of color texture, the capacity to retain water, and the ability to support plant growth. Water on Earth and in the atmosphere can be in solid, liquid, or gaseous states.

This lesson is related to these standards because the students will be classifying rocks according to their properties.

Context

The students have been working on objects that are the same and different. They have compared various things in the classroom such as themselves, backpacks, patte rn blocks, sorting bears and coins. This lesson is a continuation on the topic of same and different.

Materials

Variety of rocks

Procedure

  • Pass out rocks to students in groups of 4.
  • After allowing a few minutes for students to look at and observe the rocks, call on different students to describe a rock from their group.
  • Ask questions such as: how big is the rock? What is the shape of the rock? What is the color? Is the rock rough or smooth?
  • Have each child create a set of rocks that each share at least two characteristics.
  • Walk around and check off students who successfully complete task.
  • Explain that we could create all sorts of sets based on the sets that they have created. This is another way we can determine if something is the same or if something is different.

Student Assessment

  • Oral questioning of each student to describe a rock from their group.
  • Checklist to check off each student that successfully created a set of rocks that share at least 2 characteristics.
