Opel has announced with this
teaser rendering, that it will be producing
a coupe-roadster in 2004. Based on the Corsa platform and
in part previewed by the Frogster concept shown at Frankfurt
in 2001, the car features an electro hydraulically operated
retractable steel roof, as pioneered on the Mercedes SLK.
Built in France by Heuliez, the car will compete with the
Peugeot 206cc (that Heuliez also builds) and the recently
launched Ford Street Ka.
In America the best selling
car is the Honda Accord, followed closely by the Toyota
Camry. Due for launch in 2004, the Chevrolet Malibu is an
established American nameplate that is part of a new offensive
from GM to gain ground in this market sector and gain conquest
sales from the leading Japanese brands. The car is based
on the Epsilon platform that the Opel Vectra
and Saab 9-3 already share and because of this the Malibu
is more European with smaller external dimensions, more
interior space and a fastback/hatchback variant available.
It is also the first Chevrolet passenger car (non-SUV) to
feature the new corporate facial identity.
Designed by Pinifarina, the
new Nubira saloon will be followed by a fastback and estate
model soon after launch at the Geneva Motor Show next year.
The car is the second new
Daewoo product after the companys recent rebirth under
GM and follows its predecessor in being conservatively designed
with dimensions just up on a European lower medium car and
prices likely to be just up on a European small car.
