Descendants of Alexander Bean

Notes

4. John Bean Elder

From "The Beans of Trout Creek" by Martha Everson Jones:
John Bean (1792-1871), who came to Jasper County, Texas in 1847 married Jane Youngblood (1795-1861) about 1813-14. His three oldest children, Sarah (1815-1885), Ann (1817-?), and Robinson (Robison, Roberson) (1823-after 1880) were born in Edgefield District, South Carolina. About 1820 John moved his family to Georgia where he lived at least part of the time in Jasper and Walton Counties. He appeared on the 1820 census of Jasper County, Georgia as a farmer. A record of purchase of two slaves is listed in January of 1824 in this same county. He is listed as a trustee in 1837 for the Pleasant Grove Academy in Walton County.  John Bean the moved his family to Claiborne Parish, Louisiana perhaps in the fall of 1839. In 1850 he is shown living in Bienville Parish, Louisiana. (Minden is the county seat of Webster County which was creased from Bienville Parish.)  Next he and most of his children moved to Jasper County, Texas around the fall of 1851 where he settled about two and a half miles southwest of Magnolia Springs. He was a Baptist preacher. Preaching was not a means of earning a living but more of a way of life for many of our pioneers.  John was also a farmer.  In 1820 John Bean owned but one slave. By 1860 the number had become sizable. His land holdings in Jasper County were also extensive. In the 1870 census of Jasper County, Texas there are a good number of Beans listed as either blacks or mulattos.  The 1880 census of Jasper County, Texas shows John Bean (age 67) a farmer and Jane (age 64) with real estate valued at $7,800 and personal estate at $13,680. At this time he still had one domestic living with him named Jesse, presumably from former days when his slave ownings were extensive.  John and Jane Bean's remains rest in the Magnolia Springs Cemetery. His monument is inscribed as was proper for a Baptist Divine, Elder John Bean.  Beside him is buried his wife, Jane.  According to the John Bean Bible: Husband John Bean, born 1791, died Dec. 25, 1860; Wife Jane Youngblood born 1796, died 1860. Married in South Carolina or just across the line in Georgia. Lived in Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, near Minden, Louisiana and then to Magnolia Springs, Texas about 1850.  2nd child named Christiana, married to Abraham Laird. James, (Rev.) was a Baptist minister, born Feb. 11, 1825
