East Butterwick is a village and township, on the east bank of the Trent, opposite West Butterwick, 5 miles E. of Epworth. It contains 378 souls and 1100 acres of land, in the parish of Messingham, but the north end of the village is in Bottesford parish. the Bottesford Beck and another large drain here fall into the Trent, and there is a ferry between the two Butterwicks. About 60 acres of low land, called Butterwick Hole, was purchased by the drainage commissioners, and is used as a receptacle for water in time of floods. Wm., Smith Esq., is lord of the manor, but the great part of the soil belongs to the Faber, Healey and, other families. The Wesleyan and Primitive Methodists have each a chapel in the village, and here also is a Baptist meeting room.
