Post Secondary Opportunites in Newfoundland for Home Educated Students

At my son's request I have been on a mission to discover admission requirements of post secondary insitutions in Newfoundland and Labrador. We are specifically concerned with admission requirements for home educated students. I emailed all the institutions I could find email addresses for and asked them about it. I then asked if I could share the information they gave me on an informational web site for home educating families. Here is the information I have received so far:

Memorial University
Under current policy at Memorial University, homeschooled applicants would be reviewed for general admission by University Committee on Admissions (a.k.a: Special Admissions Committee). Normally, the committee requires a detailed letter from the applicant in relation to his/her academic abilities and plans, extracurricular activities, interests, etc. The applicant would also be asked to provide some proof of Scholastic Test Scores (ie SATS, CTBS )in areas such as English/Language Arts, Mathematics and Science. In addition to individual performance information, such test results normally provide information regarding the academic ability of the student in relation to his/her peers. Academic references from persons (non-relative) competent to assess the student's ability to proceed with university level study may also be helpful to the committee.

Lawrence College
Our admissions requirements adhere to provincial government regulations regarding post-secondary institutions. These regulations require that our students must be in possession of a high school diploma. In the absence of this diploma, an applicant can apply for Mature Student Status, which requires that the student be at least 19 years of age and successfully complete certain testing and interviewing to be administered at this college.
Please be aware that, in addition to these academic requirements, certain programs have other requirements as well.

Operating Engineers College
the policy for entrance into one of our programs are as follows:
- $25.00 application/processing fee, which would go towards the tuition if you attend the program. Not an extra cost.
- A medical has to be completed and approved by Motor Registration Division.
- An entrance assessment has to be completed for anyone not having a Grade 12 diploma or equivalent. (Passing mark is 70%)
Having an at home education would not stop someone from attending our college. If any of your children wanted to attend our Heavy Equipment or Mobile Crane Apprenticeship Programs, then they would complete the entrance assessment.

Here at the college, we do do an entrance exam to test the knowledge of the individual; we also accept all documents and proof of learning, not only from government but from any source, in the future and at present, with the amount of education you can get online, we are starting to see potential students coming to us from many type of learning backgrounds with many types of documents.
