Shopping in contemporary Manhattan (with thanks to C.W. Walker for field research).
The ritzy shopping district in New York is mid 5th Avenue. Lord and Taylor is located a little north of 34th st. (39th ?) so that's probably the beginning. However, just north of L&T, there's just regular stores. The NY Public Library with its stately lions is at 42nd. You have to get up to Rockefeller Center (around 45th St.) and St. Patrick's Cathedral for the expensive stores to really begin. (Saks is across from Rockefeller Center). So between Rockefeller Center and the beginning of Central Park is very upscale. That's where all the big jewelry stores with all the gems in the windows are located. Also some trendy designers, although they tend to be scattered too ---some are along 57th St. (where the uptown art galleries are) or even further uptown on the East side.
Right across the street from stores like Bendels (very, very snobby) are The Disney Store and the Warner Bros. store (occupying the old FAO Schwartz located right next to the Park). These are huge 'flagship stores' that look like theme park attractions. Until very recently there used to be several good and classy bookstores. I think the Metropolitan Museum also has a store in this area now. Like every other section of NY, this one is turning into a theme park. Call it Glitzy Shopping Land.
Trump Tower is located about half way between Rockefeller Center and Central Park on 5th, but a little closer to the park. It's considered a big eyesore frankly. It's all bronze colored marble and copper-color plate (the whole inside lobby has a shiny, coppery look). There's a big multi-floor waterfall and a cafe on one of the floors next to the waterfall and a good Belgium chocolates place on the bottom floor. The stores are mostly small and upscale but it's not the trendiest place on 5th to shop. Mostly, the place is a tourist attraction ---a fancy, coppery indoor mall. Still, it might be a good setting for a chase scene. (The Warner Bros or Disney Stores would be even better.) The distance from U.N.C.L.E. HQ to Trump Tower can be walked, but it would be a long walk. Trump Tower is on 5th Ave; you would have to go East through several avenues until you reached HQ between 1st and 2nd Avenues.
