Arresting the decline of the English language in Malaysian schools would be a lot easier if only there were another 1,000 or more of Mrs Jagjeet Singh, a retired English teacher.

She promises no miracles to what has now become a national concern.

But, Mrs Singh did deliver.

Four years ago, she turned 60 rural school pupils, from being unable to write a single sentence in proper English, into achievers in their UPSR (Standard Six) examination.

Another eight of her pupils from several schools in Jeli, a remote district in Kelatan got B's after missing a few sessions in the one solid week on English that she had with them.

"I used no special module or expensive materials," she said.

"I just encouraged them to listen, speak, read and write in English while stressing the importance of English for their future," she said in an interview. - Bernama
