Whitewater Adventures: Rafting Down the American River
Located in northern California near Sacramento, the American River first attracted settlers looking for gold during the 1800's.  We did see some die-hards still panning for gold, but we were looking for natural beauty, along with a hint of adventure, just enough to excite the little ones but not too much to scare them away from nature.

More than 50 of us, employees of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department and an asortment of friends, family and relatives carpooled and made the 5-6 hour drive from Southern California, braving overheating vans, sore butts and cries of "Are we there yet?"
The South Fork of the American River  consists of a series of Class 3 Rapids, ideal for families with young kids.  Not quite as risky as Class 4 or 5, the rapids still require some skillful maneuvering in some places.  However, it is safe enough for non-swimmers like myself (or so they told me ...).
Our campsite was a grassy area right by the riverbank.  The part I liked most was the fact that the rafting company staff did all the "work" - pitch our tents, cook our food, as well as be our river guides and lifeguards.
